The reason our fearless class secretary, John Chittick, is not penning this column is that he is currently in Vietnam under the auspices Harvard and the Sony Corp. John received his Ph.D. from Harvard in education and did his doctoral dissertation on AIDS among adolescents in the Third World.

His assignment in Vietnam: to consult and help the government of Vietnam with programs of AIDS education for the youth of that country. John's frequent postcards feature pictures of him with his various constituencies, and he writes that he loves the country and the important work he is doing. In his most recent card he reported: "I spoke to the Communist Youth Union yesterday. They weren't overly excited about my AIDS message until I mentioned it as a major threat to their army (China is not so far away!)" (And we all thought John took Geography 1 because he heard it was a "gut.")

On the home front, a recent news release informs us that our classmate Paul Francis has joined Baker & Hostetler as a partner in its Houston office. Baker & Hostetler is one of the nation's largest law firms with offices all over the place, says the release. Paul was previously with the Houston firm of Elkins and Yount, and specializes in complex civil and commercial litigation.

Congratulations are also in order for Andrew Kempner, who has been named director of cardiac rehabilitation of the North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Mass. Andy was assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School until 1993 and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology. (I wonder if he participated in John Chittick's quadruple by-pass?)
