There's a lot of news this month. I spoke with Rick Sprague, who has started a new business Moody/Sprague in Birmingham, Ala. His architecture cum interior decorating team works primarily on historic properties. He and his wife, Patricia, are "focusing on raising their kids, Whitney 13 and Patrick 11," although Patricia finds the time to work on improving the local elementary schools, while Rick serves on the local Dartmouth interviewing board.

I also had a short conversation with TedSeverance, who sadly announced that his major lumberyard concern in Hooksett, N.H. burnt to the ground in January. He is upbeat about making a recovery and has promised to let us know his future plans rebuilding his company. Hey, why not send him a note?

A recent Crain's New York Business carried an article about Equitable Life Assurances's aggressive real estate division, headed up by Tim Welch, senior vice president. The article carries a handsome photo of Tim striking a forward-looking pose and the caption states (for those of you shopping around for NYC office space) "Sur-Real Estate."

Many in the class will be saddened to learn of Jim Lemke's passing on February 16, 1996. A longer notice of Jim's life and Dartmouth memories will be presented in an upcoming issue.

Carlos Ordonez has been appointed managing director of business development by YAR Associates, an ad agency in New York. He had previously been a vice president for American Express and the Cadbury Beverages companies. Carlos is presently residing in Hoboken, N.J.

By now you've received Tom Quinn's first class newsletter. It was great! Tom and I had a chat and agreed that we would both try to include more personal information about you guys, provided you cooperate. We need news from you, otherwise, we are left with press clippings announcing another feather in the resume cap. Hey, that's cool but what do you do for fun? Share this information with your old friends. Tom recently began a 15-month stint as a visiting fellow at the National Institute of Justice in Washington, D.C. He splits his time between the capitol and his home in Wilmington, Del., where he and his second wife, Marilyn, are raising his sons.

Returning to Dartmouth to head up career services, is Skip Sturman. Skip had previously served as a director of the office in the 1980s, when he left to start his own career consulting business, Career Works. Not only is Skip nationally recognized in the field of career services (he's the author of The Value of a Liberal Arts Education), but he's also our alumni class rep.

From California comes news about Tom Baer, who has been appointed principal of Mountain View High School. A principal of a rival high school in the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School district said: "He's a visionary. He's a guy with a barrel of energy and a story a minute." Tom has recently set up a pioneering project that bridges the Silicon Valley workplace and local schools.

Not only do scientists, engineers, and computer designers go to schools to share job experiences, but students are also placed in area work sites as apprentices. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, live in Los Gatos with their two children, Rachel, who is at the University of Oregon, and Emelia, in high school. Cynthia told me: "He's an avid fisherman and a die-hard 49er's fan."

L&F (Remember this part of the column stands for lost and found classmates): Tom Quinn is searching for John Ludlow, lost in Minnesota, because "we were pretty tight as freshmen." Rick Sprague wants to track down Dick David, his old roommate perhaps residing in Chicago? And DuncanWood wants to hear more about DavidStonebreaker's bike ride across the country with his oldest son (something he had done solo many years ago). Next month we hear from Ted White, Bruce Flaherty,Dave Graves, and Doug Simpson. Let's see. Have I forgotten someone? Perhaps YOU! (And I'm still hoping to hear some news back from John Howard, DamonLawrence, Alan Kibbe, and John Joline, a great class artist and mountain climber.)
