Walking past the Hop we heard the unmistakable wooosh-wooosh sound of a washing machine. Inside the Rotunda a woman was ironing and hanging up laundry. We knew that budget cuts have been tough on the arts, but we had no idea that the Hop was taking in wash.
Turns out the woman was the artist Meredith Davis, and she wasn't doing laundry but an "installation." Why the laundry theme? It is traditionally thought of as being women's work, she explained. "Most of the clothes are children's clothes symbolizing children as the innocent victims of domestic violence."
Domestic violence is aired at the Hop.
