The ovation lasted for 22 minutes and 15 seconds. The crowd was on its feet worshipping. It was a milestone accomplishment of epic proportions. No, it wasn't Cal Ripken's 2,131 st consecutive game played. It wasn't even the keg finally kicking at the 'Bo's class tent. No, the epic event that I'm referring to is our own Dave Dowd completing a triathlon. I know that this is no big deal for the likes of Tom Tomai or SammyWeinbaum, but remember, Dave wasn't nicknamed "The Load" at Dartmouth for noth- ing. Granted, I haven't seen Dave for about ten years, but I still can't picture him as a longdistance guy (on a bike or on a golf course). Nevertheless, he assured me that this was true. Dave and his wife, Augusta (like the golf course), have three children and he is a partner in the Birmingham law firm of Burr, Forman, and Load working with classmate and high-jumper extraordinnaire Graham Beene. Dave also humbly told me that he is president of the Alabama Dartmouth Club. (Didn't Dartmouth recruit an ice hockey goalie from Alabama a few years ago? Go figure.)
Congratulations are also in order for Cindy Ricks and Carey Fiertz. Cindy was elected co-president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York City, replacing Carey, who held the position for four years and was elected to the executive committee of DAANYC.
At Dartmouth women always gravitated to Mike Teneriello. He was an engaging, funny guy. But, I don't remember him being anything more than a genuine friend to all these women. So it should come as no surprise that Dr. Mike Teneriello has joined the medical staff at Allegheny General Hospital as director of gynecologic oncology. That takes guts. Also on the doctor front, Dr. Gary Simonds has joined the neurosurgery department at Geisinger. Gary had been specializing in pediatric brain tumors, spina bifida, epilepsy surgery, and endoscopic spinal and brain surgery (obviously more adept with a scalpel than he was with a beerpong paddle).
On the path of life, we reach certain crossroads where important decisions are made that affect the rest of our lives. Sometimes, these decisions may seem trivial to others (e.g., Gordy Daisley choosing between Titleist and Top-Flite; LymanMissimer choosing between Smith and Holyoke). But I happen to know that this December marks the 20th anniversary of a crossroads decision for Wild Bill Conway. You see, soon after arriving at Dartmouth, Wild Bill set a vocational course to become a wealthy and famous herbalist, marketing natural highs to the world. But after consuming one of his home brew herbal concoctions one evening in his South Mass dorm room and subsequently getting his stomach pumped at Dick's House, Wild Bill abandoned this quest and set his sights on practicing law. Now, when he's not fly fishing, renovating an historic house that is haunted (with friendly ghosts I'm told), and pacifying his wife who is due with their second child, Wild Bill is the managing partner of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Trautman Sanders.
Lastly, Dave Brown has been tapped to be the new president of the Greenville, Ind., Chamber of Commerce. Dave was selected from about 25 candidates and eight finalists. Inside sources report that Dave prevailed on the merits of his cornshucking and jump-shot abilities. Jeffrey and I wish you all happy and safe holidays.
