Lefty Mark Johnson has gone from being a Mudcat to a Pirate, batting his way up through the baseball hierarchy (not to mention the evolutionary chain) right into the majors. At about the time you read this, the first-baseman will be en route to Bradenton, Fla., to begin spring training with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He moved up from AA ball with the Carolina Mudcats, where he was player of the year and MVP of the Southern AA League.
It was his bat that made him top Mudcat. Last season Mark hit .284 and 25 home runs, and he batted 90 teammates home-with a broken thumb that took a month to heal. If you're in Pittsburgh, don't forget to bring your green banners to the stadium.
