The Cube would have loved it. At the annual awards banquet of the football team, the Pete Conroy Award was presented to outside linebacker and co-captain Hunter Buckner '94, a second team All-Ivy choice for the second straight year. Buckner won the award as the player "feared most by opponents and best loved by teammates."

Phil Coyle worked long and hard for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before he retired last fall and was named laboratory associate director emeritus. Now he has taken up residence in Washington, D.C., and has been sworn in as director of operational tests and evaluations for the Department of Defense. Phil will be responsible for assessing the test results of all major defense acquisitions programs, overseeing the selection and testing procedures for weapons, equipment, and munitions. With the expected cutbacks in the defense budget, I expect Phil to be in the hot seat for the next few years as all the services and the defense contractors scramble to save their programs.

Dave Tiersten has been named director of health-care services at Archer Management Services. Dave lives in Maplewood, N.J., and most recently was director of the department of pathology at Hackensack Medical Center. He has served as president of the New York State Society of Pathologists and chief of pathology specialties in various New York hospitals.

In a nationwide survey of attorneys, Will Sogg has been named one of the best lawyers in America. Only 13,000 lawyers nationwide and 700 in Ohio receive such designation, identifying the "best and brightest" in the legal profession. All their names are published in the Best Lawyers in America directory, of which Flint Ranney has a copy on his bedside table.

Ed Cumings is a man of rare accomplishment. He writes, "Besides having a thorough knowledge of biology, anatomy, and world history, I know 12 foreign languages: Spanish, French, Italian, Swedish, German, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Croatian, Romanian, and Japanese...l am studying Arabic and Portuguese this year at Harvard, which will be the 13th and 14th languages." Fortunately, he sent this info in English, which I just barely can handle.
