Happy Easter y'all from Texas, where we are spending part of April with family. Do you remember that your class was the first to "escape" compulsory chapel? Dr. William Lougee 1888 writes in his memoirs, "The bell rang at fifteen minutes of eight, then tolled a warning, and the doors were shut at ten minutes of eight sharp. Attendance was carefully monitored. President Bartlett conducted exercises of scripture reading, prayer and a hymn. Some tough pranks were pulled off. At one time holes were bored in the organ bellows, and fish horns were stuck into them."

Does '29 have any memories such as these? Fran Dudley has been recovering from a major operation (and Charlie's cooking!). She is well on the road to full recovery, as is Katie Black after their auto accident.

Katie and Dick Black's new address is Kendal at Hanover 145, Hanover, NH 03755. During their move Dick found among his Dartmouth memorabilia the football from 1929, Dartmouth 34-Harvard 7. It will be passed on to the Athletic Department. Katie is still receiving orders for her book, The Sunin the North, which she wrote about their six years in Argentina during the Peron years.

A letter from Nat Barrows reminds me of Moosehead Lake days, when we all along with Jane and Chris Born summered there. Nat met his Betty Jean (BJ) at Moosehead. He says he has developed macular degeneration and is legally blind. However, he is otherwise in good health and happy in Florida.

We sadly report the death of Abram Washton and Joe O'Leary, and send our sympathy to their families. "The still North remembers them."

Rip's thought for the month: The prof who knows his chosen field In learning need not bow nor yield. He looks for tenure as his due, (A perq that's not for me or you.) Alas, it seems we'll never stem The arrogance of academe.
