Spring came late to the Hanover area, but as always finally arrived—very much appreciated and without floods!
Your president Charles Dudley spent a part of spring in the hospital section of Kendal, where Art Nighswander also spent some time. When Charlie was able to visit their apartment, Frances made him his favorite lunch, oyster stew.
Another bit about the 1888 Commencement, written in 1939 by Dr. William W. Lougee, class of 1888: "The Commencement Day itself was June 28, later in the month than is the custom now, because of the long winter vacation. This vacation conserved fuel for both college and students, and gave time to the host of men who went out to replenish their finances by teaching winter schools. The White Church was packed by our class and Commencement guests, and it was hard to tell who was most thrilled, the class or the parents, assembled to see their 'boys' graduate from college."
Your secretary made a quick trip to Bozeman, Montana, to see her oldest grandson graduate from college, and visits to daughters in Denver and Houston. While gone, Rip spent 10 days with his family on Cape Cod.
The class has lost another member: Nat Barrows died last February in Maine. I have many fond memories of the years Nat and Billie owned LittleW. Island on Moosehead Lake. Once when they came for dinner, the book I was then reading, Portnoy's Complaint, was on a table, and Nat wanted to know, "What is a nice girl like you doing reading that book?" (Forgetting he had lent it to Larry!)
Rip adds, When Chicken Little started calling, "Look out, Look out, the sky is falling." We saw her obvious defiance Of any sort of sense or science. So now with threats of warming oceans, Lets get the facts and skip the notions.
