With all the rain and miserable weather this spring Dartmouth was fortunate to celebrate Commencement on the Green before rain returned later that day. The valedictorian had built his talk on John Dickey, who obviously has had a great influence on his life at Dartmouth. John and Chris' years at the College left a great legacy, and the class of '29 proudly remember them, with him as a classmate and president.

Elie Wiesel, who was among the honorary degree recipients, gave the Commencement address. His was a beautiful message to the graduates, the theme being memory, during which he said, "My memory, though rooted in the darkness of the abyss, has taught me the imperative of solidarity and friendship."

During a visit to Kendal recently I met Art Nighswander in the hall. He looked good and we had a short but great visit.

Our classmate Austin Starrett died May 5 in Doraville, Georgia. He was Regents Professor of Mathematics at Georgia Tech 'til retirement. We remember fondly the renewal of our friendship with him and Claudine at our last reunion.

Rip:

"With finest dreams and clever schemes I find out to my sorrow The words I write so late at night Don't look so good tomorrow."
