This week I received a clipping from the Los Angeles Times picturing a tourist couple in front of a Tokyo shop. Yes, there were Lynand Claudie Brock experiencing the pinch of the declining dollar. According to Lyn, "It's dramatically expensive-breathtaking." Claudie's view was: "Horrendous! For breakfast this morning we spent $30, and that only buys toast and juice." I trust they were able to survive and get back to Pennsylvania for a Mac Donald's breakfast.

I had a brief visit with Bill Hudson, whom I had not seen since our last reunion. In 1991 he and his wife, Joan, moved from Massachusetts to Emmaus, Pa., where they had lived earlier. Bill is now selling residential real estate, and while the market is currently a little slow, he keeps busy and enjoys it. The Hudsons have four grown children and were within days of having a total of nine grandchildren when we talked. They had two significant events planned. Their youngest son, Christopher, who was a Rotary Exchange Student in Norway, was married Labor Day weekend. Then Bill and Joan traveled to Australia for a month-long visit with their daughter in Canberra. On the way down under, they planned to take a two-week vacation in New Zealand. They hope to attend the 40th Reunion next June.

Having learned that Dean Allard works at the U.S. Naval Historical Center, I called him to learn more about the center and his work there. Dean is the director of naval history and is located at the Washington Navy Yard with the Navy Museum and Art Collection. His responsibilities include historical research, publications, underwater archaeology, and naval history exhibits including the U.S.S. Constitution in Boston. Dean spent the last part of his NROTC active duty assigned to the Navy History Office. After discharge, he became a civilian employee and subsequently earned an M.A. from Georgetown and a Ph.D. from George Washington University. He and Constance have three children and three grandchildren, all of whom live in the D.C. area. Dean sees Dick Cornman and Gale Roberson occassionally. The Allards plan to attend the 40th.

While Dr. Joe Bachman, a gastroenterologist and internist, is practicing at the LaSalle Clinic in Neenah, Wise., his wife, Frances, manages the Fox Valley Soup Kitchen. The Bachmans have three grown children who are involved in some unusual activities. Daughter Mary '90 has been an assistant to John Rassias, the noted languages professor at the College, for the past three years. She is entering Georgetown to start a program in foreign affairs this fall. Son Joe '91 is in a graduate forestry program at Duke and studied the harvesting of trees in the tropics in Zaire during the summer. And the youngest, Sharon, a graduate of Kalamazoo, has just started an assignment with the Peace Corps in Sri Lanka. Last March Joe and Frances took part in an alumni cruise on the Mississippi along with Pete Briggs and NealAllen. Joe keeps in touch with Paul Merriken and Jim Nelson and is looking forward to seeing the class in June.
