83 One of the nice things about being class secretary is that you have the perfect excuse to pick up the phone and call anyone who happens to cross your mind. What I'm getting at here is that I had nothing, absolutely nothing, in the little Dartmouth file I sleep with under my pillow as deadline time rolls around.
So I gave the old phone dial a whirl and called Charles deGunzburg. Now, I'm citybred and never thought of myself as unsophisticated, but the Charles I remember from college was so urbane it made me a little nervous. The man spoke a foreign language and knew about wines.
You can imagine how surprised I was to learn that Charles is living in New York—and on the Upper East Side! He's in charge of Absolut vodka for Seagrams and in his spare time has taken up flying. He has logged more than 1,000 miles doing things like jetting (or is it propelling?) up to Montreal for lunch with his grandmother or to his country place outside of Boston for the weekend. Be still your beating hearts: Charles is still single.
Would You Have Wanted Your Sister to DateThese Guys? Part II: Mike Doherty gave me the run-down on the Heorot crew. Mike himself has been in Chicago for the last five years, working for Citibank in the loan-syndicate group. He and his wife, Amy, recently moved from Winnetka to a house they built in Lake Forest. "We're glad it's done," said Mike with quintessential Doherty understatement, "and if anyone's in the market for a house in Winnetka just let me know."
Mike met Amy, by the way, more than seven years ago through Richie Diver; she grew up with his sister. And if that's not enough, Tom Herold, who's still teaching at the Hill School in Philadelphia, is engaged to John Donnelly's sister. Richie is living in Wilmington, Del., running Diver Chevrolet with his cousin. He and wife Deborah (no one we know's sister) have two boys, Chris and George.
John, who works in real estate in Minneapolis, is also married and has a two-year-old daughter. Close at hand in St. Paul, Minn., are roommates (but probably not for long) Nick Thomey and Eric Anderson. Nick is engaged to a woman named Katie. They are to be married in July, and one hopes Nick will have his own place by then. Nick works for a start-up software firm while Snoose (I just have to say, I never called him that in my life) is finishing a graduate degree in education.
And last but not least, Mike reports that MattHaley and his wife, Jane, had a little girl last November. The newly expanded Haley fam- ily lives in Maryland, where Matt works in strategic planning for Susquehanna Pfaltzgraff.
Congratulations are due to Dave Krall. He recendy became a partner in the Cincinnati law firm of Taft, Stettinius. "I'm still waiting for it to kickin," he says. Did you know that Dave's wife, Cindy, was his high-school sweetheart? (They've been married almost ten years and have two boys, Steven 5 and Andrew 3.) I don't know why, but I was just floored by that. Perhaps it was because the very day I spoke with Dave I ran into the opposite member of my long-distance relationship from freshman year. We exchanged one of those deer-caught-in- the-headlights glances. He wanted to marry me, too, you know. He did so.
If anyone else ended up with their HTH, I'm sure the entire class would love to hear about it. Please send testimonials and before-and-after shots to:
