Little would I have guessed that Mac Gardner had anything to do with my blowdryer. But it's true, and from now on any time I flick that helpful little switch and feel those hot currents coursing across my scalp, I shall think of Mac and whisper my heartfelt thanks. Last fall Hartwell Mclntyrr Gardner was elected presidentand C.O.O. of Helen of Troy Ltd., a company which develops and markets all sorts of personal care products. If you haven't heard of Helen of Troy, perhaps you have heard of Vidal Sassoon Revlon and Fr. Scholl's. Well, Helen makes some of their products. Previously Mac was presidentofAppliance Corp. of America, which, among other things, was responsible for Betty Crocker kitchen appliances. His expertise seems to be in restructurings, mergers, and acquisitions, so who knows what other handy household gadgets we'll have Mac to thank for one day. He, wife Kathryn, and their three children live in El Paso, Texas.
So many new jobs: Christopher marquet is now a senior managing director at Kroll Associates, responsible for global business development. I can't tell you much about Kroll except that they have divisions called "information services" and "global risk assessment," and Chris (who at Dartmouth majored in physics, economics, and philosophy!) has done work on behalf of the Russian and Brazilian governments. Mark Allen, who got his degree in dentistry from Fairleigh S. Dickinson College of Dental Medicine in Hackensack, N.J., joined the Braun Dental group in Barre, Vt., last year.
Kevin Meuse has been named a partner of the law firm of Warner & Stackpole in Boston. He works primarily in trusts and estates. His hometown paper, The WakefieldDaily Item, described Kevin's job rather charmingly, I thought, in a way you wouldn't see in, say, The New York Times, as helping "clients with large estates who wish to transfer their property with the minimum of gift and property taxes." Kevin and his wife, Susan Wong, live in Belmont, Mass.
Byron Kalogerou has been appointed general counsel of Tyco's international operations. I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea what Tyco does (perhaps the same thing as Kroll Associates?), but I can tell you that Byron will be based in Luxembourg and will be reported to by lots of other people who sound rather important in their own right. While some have been scaling corporate heights, AndyEvans has been busy with the real thing. Last May he got to the top of Mount Everest 29,029 feet high. When Andy's on the ground, he lives in Canada Calgary, to be exact.
Congratulations to John McNeill for receiving a four-year, $254,443 National Science Foundation award (where do they come up with these figures?) for his research in integrated circuit design for use in fiber optic telecommunications and digital cellular telephones. John is an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at WPI, in Worcester, Mass. More honors: Rev. James Nadeau, rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, Maine, with a congregation of over 2,000, was named one of five TRIO Achievers last fall by tktk. (TRIO awards go to federally funded programs that increase access to higher education.) After Dartmouth James received an advanced theology degree from Gregorian University in Rome, as well as studying at Edinburgh University in Scotland, the Institute Universaire de Technologie in France, Hebrew University in Israel, and the University of Copenhagen. Jim also serves on the University of New England faculty.
It's never too late to sign up for Reunion: June 19-21.
