Well, I've just tried a new trick in the never-ending battle to get news for this column, and believe it or not, it worked! The Internet has come to my rescue. As a result of the Reunion yearbook questionnaires we've collected more than 100 email addresses of classmates. So I zapped out some queries to randomly selected victims, and a number of them answered, sometimes within minutes! And here is what they said:

From Alfred "Fred" Chang, M.D.: "I was busy working away and was pleasantly surprised to see this diversion (on my screen). I'm keeping very busy as chief of the division of surgical oncology at the University of Michigan. We've been here for eight years and have been enjoying Ann Arbor. My wife, Lana, is busy with volunteer work at the University Hospital and our boys, Chris (15 years) and Stephen (nine years) are very active in sports and doing well in school. I recently heard from Doug Hale, who is in the Washington, D.C., area, that his wife, Mary, will be expecting their second child this late spring. They have an 18-month-old son named Matthew."

From Arnie Hanson: "You asked—so here goes Last year we moved back to N.H. after 12 years in Texas. Took position as COO of a group of companies owned by a former legal client. Readjusting to N.H. winters. My wife, Barbara, runs a name tag business for high-school reunions that is portable, so she moved the business with us. Only '7l I've talked to is StevePatterson. We are both looking forward to the Reunion. His son, Tom, is trying to get into Dartmouth's class of 2000. My son Chris is a member of the class of 1997. Since this the first news I've ever provided for the column, better stop now before wearing out my welcome."

From Lincoln Rathnam: "The family is well and enduring a severe New England winter without too much problem. I have resigned as a managing director of Scudder, Stevens & Clark and am establishing my own investment management firm, which is more fun and exhilarating than I had anticipated. Our dog, Freckles (a boxer), hasn't learnt any new tricks. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Reunion this June."

And finally, from Bobby Schnabel: "My family (wife Edie, kids Heidi 11 and Cory eight) and I are happily settled in Boulder, Colo., where I've been on the computerscience faculty since 1977. I am currently associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Engineering. We're all outdoors-people and love the nice climate and terrain here. We actually get to Hanover at least once a year since almost all of our immediate family lives in Vermont and New Hampshire. But we rarely see Dartmouth classmates, except this past October when my son and I had a great time participating in the Reunion of the 1970 Dartmouth football team (I was the team's manager). We have never been to a Reunion (since I attended the fifth before I was married and living in Colorado) but will all be there for the 25th."

And finally, consistent with all this (digital) envelope pushing, I'm pleased to announce that the class of 1971 Web page is now a (virtual) reality. We hope it'll be an interesting spot to visit for Reunion information now as an on-going digital "interconnect" for us all. Go to and click on alumnireunions '71.
