Welcome, welcome, Bill Robbins, to L.A. Bill and his wife, Hila, moved here not terribly long ago from Pennsylvania. Bill, I hear, is v.p. of business development at Bio Imaging Technologies, a medical imaging software company, while Hila is in a post-graduate dentistry program at UCLA.

I still haven't heard from my old friend, the mysterious Mike Adams, but thanks to the Asian Wall Street Journal I can inform you that Mike, who used to work for Bechtel,is now also a v.p. of business development. He, however, is living in Hong Kong and works for a company called Asia Power Group Ltd.

In fact, all I have for you this month is news about new jobs: Richard Bradley joined the Worcester, Mass., law firm of Mirick, O'Connell, DeMallie, and Lougee as an associate attorney specializing in commercial and business litigation. Elsewhere in the same state, DavePersampieri is now a principal of Charles River Associates, a Boston consulting firm. Dave is also a member of the Metallurigical Society of the AIME, ASM International, and the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers, so I'll let you guess his area of specialization.

Chris Hull received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of North Carolina last December. According to the mention in his local paper, however, Chris's field is environmental engineering. Perhaps he is embarking on a life of thinking deeply about environmental engineering issues. Chris, by the way, lives in Durham, N.C., with his wife and young daughter.

Some of you responded positively to last column's palindrome, and I can't tell you how delighted I was to receive some of your favorites. But Monica Cahilly takes the prize as queen of word games. Sheher entire family, in fact has created a brand new word game soon to sweep the nation.

It's called "Bethump'd With Words," and has to do with origins, history, and evolution of the English language. Did you know that you have Lewis Carroll to thank for the word "chortle"? That the common name for peanut (goober) comes from Bantu? Or that English was once on the verge of extinction and not just in certain

fraternity basements? Buy the game and learn more. Word is that you'll soon be able to find Bethump'd at Barnes & Noble, but until then call (802) 496-4095 for more information.

I have heard with some chagrin that Mark Weiss hoped to live his whole life without being mentioned in Class Notes. He is, however, too much of a celebrity to ignore. Affectionately known as "Super Broker" among his associates, according to my correspondent, Gerald Uram '63, Mark is the director of the extremely successful tenant representation group of Goldman Sachs. I'm not sure what a tenant representation group is, even after reading the cover story on Mark in Real Estate New York and the profile in Real Estate Forum. Somehow I got the impression it has absolutely nothing to do with New York slumlords, which was my first thought. Then again, the first time I heard about lap dancing I had this image of jolly Lapland ladies in clogs. At any rate, Mark, I'm very impressed.

Since so few of you write, thank goodness for proud parents. William Chapman '49 wanted to announce son BillChapman's appointment at East Carolina University in the department of surgery, with a special interest in advanced laparoscopy which I believe I'm correct in saying has nothing to do with either lap dancing or Laplanders. Bill got his surgical training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, and later rose to be chief of general surgery at Womack Army Medical Center in Fayetteville, N.C. He was discharged honorably after eight years of military service including Desert Storm. See you next month...
