As I mentioned last month, it's increasingly unlikely that I'll I visit Hanover in 1997, and this will be the first year since 1977 that I haven't been there at least once (three times one year). I'd planned to attend this year's C.O.W., which was always, in my experience, the first or second weekend of May. This year, with minimal warning, they switched to mid-April, and I was already heavily and irretrievably invested in an April cruise.
Next year, with ample notice, there's something new: both class officers and club officers are to meet during the Sept. 11-12 weekend, a combination now to be called Leadership Weekend. Being both (treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of Tucson as well as your secretary), I'm eagerly awaiting more information, to learn how I'll be divided. Meantime, as our tribe diminishes, our DAM column has been trimmed to 250 words, to make room for another thousand alumni, class of '97.
Question: Are there any other club officers among us '30s? Leadership Weekend provides us an opportunity for a pre-70th tune-up. I hope there will be no changes this time, as Chuck Jacobs and I have reservations for cruises in April and December 1998.
In a shop window I've just seen a handbag with the appropriate motto: "I'm not aging. I'm marinating." Not appropriate, however, for Ted Wolf, who had a big family celebration on August 16 honoring his 90th. So far he's barely escaping dialysis, but his 90 year-old kidneys won't tolerate marinating. Join me in congratulations and good wishes to our poet laureate.
