Mike Norman has taken over as class secretary for the Dartmouth Medical School's class of 1963, but his recent column in Dartmouth Medicine will serve to update his undergraduate classmates as well. Alike is now chair of the department of pediatrics at the Carolinas Medical Center, the core hospital of the Carolinas Health Care System in Charlotte. The medical center serves as one of the teaching hospitals for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. In his recent column Mike said that after his navy service, "I migrated back to Philadelphia and the Children's Hospital, where I served first as a fellow in immunology-nephrology."

He also had a hand in the founding of the department of pediatrics of Jefferson Medical School. In Charlotte "I'm involved in administration, patient care, teaching, and believe it or not, 'some lingering clinical research as well."

Class President Oscar Arslanian writes that he produced an event called Jazz Goes to the Movies at a large outdoor arena called the John Anson Ford Amphitheater in East Hollywood, "which has taken a great deal of energy." He called it "one of the hot jazz events of the summer in L.A." The program, part of Jazz Pilgrimage '97, featured three-time Grammy nominated Charlie Haden/Quartet West: Allen Broadbent, piano; Ernie Watts, sax; Larance Marable, drums; and Charlie Haden, bass, playing under the stars and before a montage of classic film clips. The evening also included the American Jazz Institute Orchestra.

Anyway, it's obvious that the proportion of our class who have their natural hair color (without help) or any hair at all is shrinking. While some still have their own rug rats around, our proportion of grandparents is growing, and some of those who had children while still on the Hanover plain are now facing grandkids' queries about attending Dartmouth! Let's have a contest for the first classmate to have a natural grandchild admitted.

News Notes: Jim Nova has teamed up with two partners to establish a merchant banking firm providing factoring, leasing, asset-based lending, private placements, and commercial banking...Dartmouth faculty member Mike Gazzaniga has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences...Peter Holbrook's traveling exhibition was in the Springfield (Mo.) Art Museum from Sept. 13 through Nov. 2.
