When this appears in print, the football season will be in its last gasp, and I shall hope to have reports from moderately reliable sources as to attendance at the various games. By now, also, the Brown Weekend Reunion will be a matter of history, and we can tell what the prospects are for a continuance on an annual basis on the corresponding weekend each fall.
Certain not to see the Big Green in action this fall is John D. Johnson, who was recently elected managing director of a $14 million petro-chemical and lubricants plant at Ghent, in Belgium. John has been with Texaco these many years and now comes to light in NATO Territory after sojourns in various parts of the civilized and uncivilized world.
A long series of coincidences has brought to light a matter of some interest to the class with regard to this year's Big Green eleven. A certain Thomas Boyan Jr. is playing tackle for the team; it further transpires that he comes from Schenectady; and the clincher is that the little information Thomas Sr. gave for the 25-year yearbook does list a son by that name. Hence the inevitable conclusion that the youngster is indeed the real Thomas Boyan Jr. But you'd think the Old Man might have condescended to write instead of making all this research essential!
The Kennebunk Junior High School opened this fall with the addition of that eminent member of the class, Chester Emerson; he will teach Grade 8 sciences, and good luck with the little monsters! He did graduate work at the University of New Hampshire and the University of Maine.
Lt. Col. David S. Pallister has assumed the post of Pease Air Force Base (Dover, N. H.) vice commander under Col. Leslie A. Smith, commander. Colonel Pallister came to Pease from assignment as deputy base commander, Nouasseu AB, Morocco. Welcome back to civilization, Dave.
In all the furor of the current political high-jinks, trust Belden G. Bly to enter the lists at the local level again. He has announced his candidacy for re-election as Representative in the 11th Essex District (Mass.), which includes Saugus, Lynnfield, Middleton, Boxford, and Georgetown. He has been a house member for the past 16 years and is an outstanding legislative expert on educational matters. He has served as chairman of the House Committee on Education and was the bi-partisan choice to be the legislature's delegate to the White House Conference on Education.
Educated at Dartmouth, Harvard, Boston University, Northeastern, and the University of Colorado, he holds A.B., LL.B., and Ed.M. degrees. A practicing attorney, he has been a law teacher for the past twenty years and was a recent winner of a National Science Foundation Award in Bacteriology at the University of Colorado.
It seems as though this is an annual report, but, anyway, Win Mayo has been elected as co-chairman of the clubs and organizations division of the United Fund drive in Leominster, Mass. He is president of the Mayo Agency, Inc. He is also a trustee of the Leominster Public Library, trustee of Leominster Hospital, director of the Leominster Visiting Nursing Association, past director of the Recreation Center, member of the Rotary Club, officer of Wachusett Council Boy Scouts, and the Chamber of Commerce.
Pete Merritt reports that "I've moved away from the demons of progress. A new super-highway exit means my former home will be pulled down soon. Necessity which, I hope, will be progress. Saw Jim Carpenter, who claims to have Carte Blanche with a house wrecker to cart away anything his Volkswagen will carry. Saw him at 4 A.M. one morning with a 2' x 2' x 10' 300- pound piece of brown stone sticking out two feet beyond his VW on either side. Building a 10' outside stairway a la the pyramids. What a grim reaper that bus would be if you hit it."
A nice letter from Bud Fox, perhaps now Grover (?), recounts his move into his new "dream house," only a few months late and already showing signs of slip-shod construction. No. 1 son graduated last June from California (Berkeley); he returns to California this fall for Law School. "Barbara andJohn Slattery attended his graduation ceremonies with us, also reception following. We drove over to Ross to see their new home - tres magnifique! Sits on the side of a hill overlooking wooded Marin County and Mt. Tamalpais. John's daughter was about to be married - boy, the things kids do to make us feel old!
"See Cy MacKinnon almost daily at the office, We're both in sales at R. R. Donnelley - the printers. Cy is Midwestern district sales manager, and does a helluva job! My wife does publicity and public relations work for Northwestern University in Evanston. Our #2 son, Scott, remains in California and will be a junior at Cal Poly at Pomona this fall."
Among others who have recently moved is Stearns MacNutt, who removed himself to the "better side of the tracks" in Sands Point, L. I., and to a house on one floor, having dumped a traditional house at the peak of the real estate market. Bill Stratton in reply to an inquiry as to his recent change of address, states, "The move is strictly business - I'm not running away from anything. Still with the same business - the same wife - the only significant change being the reduction of resident offspring from five to two. Our three oldest are now married and on their own. We'd love to see any '38ers who may be in the vicinity. The bar and refrigerator are well stocked and open to all."
Another mover, Fred Becker, just managed to move his office two blocks in the same village where he has lived in the same house for 48 years - that means most of his life, I presume. He reports a recent pleasant evening with Wendell Lake; Wendell sells through Babylon (L. I.) and manages to drop in on the Beckers about once a year. I may have mentioned it before, but there was quite a spread in the National Geographic on young Lake's parachuting activities in South America this past summer.
Well, that just about cleans up the fodder for the mill for this month. If you're up this way for football, skiing, or just to buy Sweepstakes tickets, let me hear from you. And do support education in New Hampshire by subscribing to the New Hampshire Sweepstakes Charity Foundation.
