Scott Palmer writes: "Ah, the mixed blessings of the academic life—the travails of low income combined with time enough to reflect on the human condition, and to attend a conference from time to time. In October, I went to Stanford, and Bill Sweet picked me up afterward and showed me the beautiful sights of Northern California, from his lovely wife Hannah and bay-view home in Tiburon to a sampling of the Napa Valley vineyards. Retirement serves him well, and we reflected long and fondly over our days as both high school (Melrose, Mass.) and Dartmouth classmates."
John Towle has been in touch with a couple of classmates recently. He says that Pablo Lozano retired from the payroll of the City of Toronto, and speculated that Ray Hymes may retire next year from Delta Airlines, for whom he has had a long and prosperous career flying airliners. John bought some land on a mountaintop in the Carolinas not far from Furman College outside Greenville, where his daughter is a freshman in college.
Tim Tyler's name is on an automobile dealership in his hometown, Niles, Mich., where he is one of the SO or so dealers in the land who offer the Hummer for sale. He is also involved in a plastics company with his son-in-law, as well as a Hertz franchise. Jim Meyers, M.D., has an ob-gyn clinic in Walla Walla, Wash. His daughter, who just graduated from college, is in Garmisch, Germany, reportedly "doing a little work and a lot of skiing." Under the guise of a visit to his daughter, Jim plans to drag his skis over there soon. Jim says he has stayed in touch with Greg Stark over the years and that Greg, formerly a human-relations executive with MartinMarietta in Bethesda, Md., has bought a retirement home in western North Carolina.
Ed Raleigh is with DuPont in Wilmington, Del., where he is involved in regulatory affairs in the bio-tech area as it relates to plants. Ed has recently completed the restoration of a family-owned 1925 Model-T Ford coupe. His only complaint is that because it is not capable of exceeding 45 m.p.h., it can be hazardous on roads with lots of curves or hills.
In Boston Mike Nolen says he enjoys working for himself as a management consultant and executive recruiter. Mike has five children ranging in age from 27 to 37, and an eight-year-old grandson who is enrolled at the Fessenden School in Newton, Mass. Mike and his wife enjoy visiting their home at Waterville Valley in New Hampshire when the ski bug appears; after they have been in enough snow, they occasionally visit their home in Venice, Fla.
Class Newsletter Editor Bob Johnson and I both encourage you to jot a few words about yourselves and/or classmates on the handy "green cards" being sent to you for that purpose. Or simply write or call. Just as you would like to hear news about your '59 friends, they'd like to hear about you, whether or not you have moved any mountains lately.
