I shall get the unpleasantness out of the way first. Tom Adams advises that we are way behind in our drive to reach our goal for the 1997 Alumni Fund. Last year we set all sorts of records and as Tom says, we were the "top dog class." Let's try to keep the '46 name on top. So get with the check books. Enough said. I never knew who holds the class record for grandchildren. Talking to Jud Hannigan I learned that twin granddaughters Kelly and Liza are to graduate from Dartmouth this spring. That in itself is a notable event, but much more, they are two of Jud's and Grace's 22 grandchildren. And another is coming in July. Not sure 23 is a record. Certainly well above average. Jud and Grace off to South Carolina end of March, he to golf a bit, and Grace to take in lovely Charleston. If anyone can top 23, let me know. You should be publicized. Laurence "Jack" Tyler is now retired 12 years from Union Carbide and living in New Bern, N.C. I was unable to talk to Jack as he was a bit under the weather but wife Katie assures me he'll be just fine. I was a bit embarrassed when I recendy discovered that classmate Bill Wallis lives right down the road from me in Lakewood, N.J. Been there for year and a half and before that in Middletown, N.J. Had been in sales all his working life, now retired, 10 years ago. Will do the lunch thing and report more on Bill. Wrote last time about Dr. Nick Vorys. 'Tis true, he has moved to New Albany, Ohio. Built a new home there last summer. Nick and wife Ellen off in Naples, Fla., but their obliging housekeeper gave me all the news, including the fact that Nick is now retired. Still in Ohio, found out (via Dick Scharrer's University of Cincinnati newsletter) that Bernie Wexler is in Cincinnati. After WWII Bernie attended Oregon, California, and Stanford, getting his medical degree from the latter. He taught pathology and endocrinology at the med school at Cincinnati for 35 years. He's now a professor emeritus but not retired. He teaches at the Institute for Learning in Retirement at the University.
I tried to reach the California trio of George Glass, Jack Novascone, and Harry Colmery. Only successful with George. He's still running his shopping center in Laguna Beach. He reports that Jack and Harry both fine. Jack now retired and Harry still at it in the financial business. Some honors for our Gene Cafiero. He was recently made a director of American Pacific Corp. In the news release Gene's many accomplishments were listed. He spent many years in the auto industry, most notably as president, chief operating officer and vice chairman of Chrysler Corp. Gene resides in Washington Depot, Conn. Congratulations Gene!
On a sad note, I received a note from David K. Andrew's widow, Mary, saying that Dave had died suddenly on October 22, 1996. I have also been advised by the College of the deaths of classmates Robert J. Sardinas and Eldon R. Wallingford. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families.
