September 1953: The College opens for 185th year; John Sloane Dickey addresses College extolling virtues of "liberal education"; Lee Huff spends fall semester working for Foreign Operations Administration under Class of 1926 Fellowship; Don Berlin elected president of Young Republicans; Alumni Fund hits record of 17,375 donors, raising $671,147; Dan Weidenthal advertises in The Dartmouth that he "will pay cash for double-decker bed," and Dick Grassey advertises the sale of one set of drawing instruments with drawing board, ruler, and triangles; emerging from the ashes of The Jacko, Larry Martz starts new magazine known as Dart; football season opens against Floly Cross, included in the starting line-up are Dave Thielscher, Parker Caswell, Joe Mesics, Paul Mackey, Jack Godfrey, Dave McLaughlin, and Dickjennison.
News from John Moran, thanks to a note from his son, Peter '82. John, who is a cardiovascular surgeon, retired in June. At retirement, he was director of the division of cardiac surgery and professor of cardiac and thoracic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Peter reports that John "shows a strong and curious interest in compost science decomposition factors, temperature ranges, insect life" and now will have time to follow that hobby.
Bob Rafelson, who produced Easy Rider and The Monkeys among other films was the recipient of the prestigious Dartmouth Film Award in April.
Luke Case and Jack Reed traveled to Hanover to attend the 50th anniversary of the Injunaires. Jack is retired living in Brattleboro, Vt., and still sings at church socials and affairs. While visiting in Mexico, Luke reunioned with Bill Jenkins.
Bob Berry, Don Berlin, Harry Robinson, John Gillespie, and Rick Hartman represented the class at Class Officers Weekend last spring. The wheels are already turning to organize our 45th Reunion in 1999.
Matrimonial News: In May John and Sandy Gillespie's son, Lodge, married Anne Rubin in Charlottesville, Va. Don and Barbara Berlin's son, Geoffrey '84, announced his engagement to Delphine Eyraud. They will be married in Provence, France, in late August. Also Rick Hartman's son, Jason, married Colleen Kaiser in Putney, Vt., in June.
