It's day 15 of 100-plus-degree heat in Dallas with no relief in sight. I can remember a couple of IS-day streaks in college that I'm not too proud of. Anyway, as you read this in mid-October, I trust that you '79s in Texas didn't wilt away. How many of us can say that we've only worked for one company since graduation? My ole roommate Peter Greulich sent a note saying that, despite Brazil being embarrassed in the World Cup Championship game, things are going well for him in Chicago. Peter is in his "third career" with IBM. First he was in marketing, second he was in consulting, and now in outsourcing. He's the project office manager (#2 in command) of an outsourcing contract supporting the Northern Indiana Gas & Electric Cos. (keeping an eye on every paper clip). Peter is on the senior squash circuit during the winter but has been relegated to a "doubles specialist" when it comes to tennis these days.
Karen Schultz, you can run, but you can't hide. I happened to join Karen's brother, Tucker, and his wife on the golf course recently, and he shared with me some of Karen's exploits that I found simply remarkable. Karen settled down in the D.C. area and married what was described to me as a British mercenary. Her husband was the chief of security for the sultan of Oman. I guess that gig got pretty boring as the sultan was a popular guy, so he joined Karen in running a vacation tour business to England and more recently, Oman.
A while ago, Mike Scovner passed along word that he is the chief of internal medicine at Rutland Regional Medical Center and, among other things, the director of student health at Green Mountain College. Administration was very impressed with his familiarity with the campus.
Mike lives with his one wife, one daughter, three Saint Bernards, two horses, two cats, and a house goat. The Scovners took part last year in an international peace conference and managed to present some badly needed medical equipment to a clinic in southern St. Petersburg, Russia, and medical aid to some orphanages in Romania. You're a "do-gooder," Mike, and we're all proud of you.
A few other notable press releases: Blair County, Pa., first assistant district attorney Elizabeth Doyle was nominated to fill the term of district justice. The Hamilton College Board of Trustees has granted tenure to John Rassias protege CherylMorgan. Cheryl was promoted to associate professor of romance languages, is the director of the college's junior year in France study program, and has calluses on her fingertips from snapping them so much.
Finally, Dave "Klingon" Klinges has jumped from Shearson Lehman/American Express to join Bear, Stearns & Cos. as managing director in the public finance department. Klingon assists private companies with the development of public facilities such as toll roads, correctional facilities, and other infrastructure projects for which public funding is unavailable.
Just a reminder, hope to see lots of '79s at the bonfire and parade Homecoming weekend October 16-17 and tailgating in Hanover before, during, and after the Harvard game October 31. Let us know what you've been up to.
