Lacking the authority to award a Congressional Medal of Honor, the next best thing within my competence is to name the 1930 Man of the Year, and I so proclaim Gene Magenau. Though plagued during the past year or more by health problems, Gene and his crew led or pushed the class into second place in our Group I of the 1998 Green Derby (non-reunion classes. 1929-1934). In overall performance and participation, No. 1 1934 led us by only nine points, 331 to 322, far ahead of 1931 in third place. We exceeded our $72,000 goal by $6,899.

Last year Gene came home from London to be one of only two 1930s attending the 1997 Class Officers Weekend, while the rest of us either goofed off or indulged other interests. Again this year Gene attended what is now called Leadership Weekend, incorporating both class and club officers, but unfortunately he was unable to participate being confined to his hotel room under the capable supervision of daughter Jeanie. He credits this year's success to the assistance of Bob Chittim, Wayne Van Leer,Jack Wooster, and Flo Sturman and former assistants Ed Weinstein, Jim Dalglish. and Bob Blanchard

I've just returned from Leadership Weekend, attended by, in addition to Gene and Jeanie Magenau Bill Fenton and Nancy Hukill Bob Keene and Ginny Chambers, Doris Mcclory and your secretary. In general I consider the combined meetings a success. Regrettably, I learned of the recent passing of Ed Weinstein and Johnny Marsh. Obits will follow.
