Hi, everyone. It amazes me that just more than a year after graduation, Dartmouth '97s are making their mark all over the world. In this month's column, Dartmouth '97s are in England China, and more...

Before I get to that, congratulations to Gina Henry, who recently got engaged to her hometown sweetie, Jeremy!

Howie Silverman wrote that he has changed his course of study at Oxford. Originally, he was going for a second B.A. (equivalent to a master's degree). Now Howie is studying toward a D.Phil (Ph.D. in Oxford speak) in molecular genetics at the University of Oxford. His lab studies cystic fibrosis. Howie planned to travel to Greece, Italy, and Turkey during his vacation in August, and he had hopped over to Paris for a couple weekends. Jon Kenyon visited Howie before heading to Harvard Med this past fall. And Stefan Lanfer stopped by on his way to do volunteer work in Kenya.

Virgil Heathcock wrote this past summer days before he and Boris Rose left for Beijing for the first leg of their "Award Tour" (a Tribe Called Quest song that was their official roadtrip song back at Dartmouth). They will both be teaching conversational English, and Virgil will be teaching a course dealing with the American political system. Virgil wrote, "And if anyone happens to be passing- through the PRC, please stop by and say hello." Virgil also wrote that he recently ran into Alison Carter '98 at La Madeline in Georgetown, where they ended up having lunch and catching up on old times.

After 11 months abroad, Marcie Handler is finally back in the United States. She completed her internship in Cairo (working for an Egyptologist) in early June and spent June and July in Greece with Karen Stern.

Marcie wrote, "We had a fantastic summer mer together on an archaeological dig for the American School of Classical Studies in the ancient marketplace in Athens."

In July Karen and Marcie met up with Amelia Stephenson and Kathy Miller in Athens for a few days. Marcie will be at the Univer sity of Pennsylvania (with Mikey Wilson) brushing up on her ancient Greek and Latin while applying to graduate school for archaeology.

Dickon Verey wrote in August that he had just spent ten days in Hawaii with RobRogers (who had been traveling in New Zealand and Australia). They spent the first six days on Maui and then went to Molokai for the wedding of Ty Tengan and Ku'ulei (Gilberta) Reyes '98 on August 8. Dickon wrote, "The wedding was absolutely amazing, looking over a beach, and was followed by a spectacular reception. I had the great honor of explaining to the guests how Ty and Ku'ulei came to meet and fall in love while at Dartmouth. Toward the end of the evening everyone was especially amused by Rob's first attempts at ukulele playing."

Dickon wrote that several Dartmouth undergrads were present, including Nehoma Thundercloud.

Dickon said he is working in sales trading at Goldman Sachs in Boston and living in Beacon Hill just down the road from Jeff Woods and Mark Malcoun Dickson sees Andrew Bernasconi and Gregg Smith every so often.

Just outside Boston, another '97 is making her mark on the world. Anne Jones recently wrote from Wayland Middle School. This summer Anne's roommate, Kelley Hart, joined the Dartmouth alum Softball team. Anne said if they would have awarded the MVP award, Kelley would have gotten it. When Anne wrote in August, Kelley was home in California visiting her family before heading down to Mexico for a few days on the beach. When Mollie Greves came up to Boston to visit, Kelley, Mollie, and Anne hiked Mt. Chocorua in the Sandwich mountains of New Hampshire. Anne's other roommate, Sarah Lenczner had just returned from France in August, where she led a group of Rassias' students. Tom Caputo '96 joined her for a two-week excursion that led them to Munich, Prague, and more. Sarah is now back at work at a development position tion at The Advent School (where she worked last year).

Anne said that she "or Ms. Jones, as I will now be called for most of the day, is transitioning from the world of play to the real one. The sixth graders of Wayland Middle show up for orientation Sept. 2. I have spent the last three hours scraping old glue off of glue guns and trays in prepara- tion. No one said teaching was glamorous, did they!! I did manage some fun this sum- mer that included a trip to Nova Scotia with Colin Gorman, and Chris Butler and I went to a wedding recently where we received many compliments on our dancing ability..:-)"
