I got lucky in October and caught Drs. Kirsten Johansen and hubby Adams in San Francisco, where I was visiting on business. Lucky because they both are traveling all over giving papers and serving on national panels true medical jetsetters. Kirsten is a nephrologist and is doing research on the wasting experienced by dialysis patients and persons with HIV. Adams does research on the quality and cost of managed health care (Adams, I hope I said that right).

It's a small world...Before my trip to S.F., I surfed the net to get the scoop on travel/tourist information. Little did I know that I was using the services of a fellow alum, Ted Meisel, who works for City Search in Los Angeles. City Search uses locals, the natives, to gather inside information on what makes your city and mine interesting and worth visiting. Ted reported '85 citings of George Eldridge (see mea culpa below), Pam Cohen Halligan, hubby David Halligan, and Martin Steffen on the links in Boston.

The first mommies club...Joanna Tsiantas reports that she, Henrietta Hung,Sue Finegan, and Mimi Reilly Eldridge have been hanging out together on maternity leave. Joanna's second son Alexander was born in August and plays with Emma (Henrietta and Paul Perry), Connor (Sue and Mark Vasu), Katherine Diane (PatHoeg and Rick Kenneally), Matthew (Amy Brout and Rob McHugh), and another Alexander (Jenny Gable rand Steve Bloch '84).

Mea culpa...My apologies to Mimi Reilly Eldridge, who I inadvertently forgot to mention last column when announcing the birth of her son George. Hubby George Eldridge has been getting much grief about being the only one who contributed to his son's birth and he even got a call from his mother-in-law (alum by marriage)! When push comes to shove (a little maternity/labor humor), it is pretty embarrassing and I do apologize to all.

Congratulations to Mike "FootballHero" Viccora, a new partner at Seyfarth, Shaw, Farweather and Geraldson. The firm is based in Chicago, but Mike works in the Washington, D.C., office and lives in Virginia with wife Elaine and little ones Caitlvn and Jackson.

Speaking of lawyers, David Marder is now with the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he gets paid to show off his skills in the courtroom as the litigator for all SEC cases in New England. Wife Margaret Marder (whose parents were my surrogates during my time in Hanover please send them my love), is busy at home with Tommy, Becky, and Hannah.

And now for something completely different... I caught (by phone) Steve Mines in San Francisco attending an American Translators Conference and visiting Mark Inkster. Steve and Mark were about to go to a speech by Mikhael Gorbachev organized by Elise Miller, except that Gorbachev was sick and couldn't attend. Bizarre, but Steve swears it's true. Steve was about to go on a three-week trip down the Nile River with friend Tenagne Haile-Mariam '83. When not meeting with world leaders and going on adventures, Steve works in Austin, Texas, as a lawyer on death penalty cases and doing translations. Mark is a consultant for Bain and very active with the United Fund, one perk of which was to have drinks recently with spokesman Barry Bonds (this baseball fan was impressed!). I want to end with a serious thought from a book I just read: "Cherish your visions and your dreams, for they are the children of your soul, the blueprint of your ultimate achievements." Until next time, keep sending those e-mails!
