My fellow column author, John MacManus, has clearly upped the ante on roving reporting. Seems a bit low, don't you think, sending his spouse on an extensive newsgathering mission under the guise of a "girl's weekend." What did you do, John, sew a teeny, tiny microphone into Cindy's luggage—spousal espionage? Next thing we know, John will beorganizingcross-countryplay dates—his kids will arrive, dictaphone at the ready, combing for every morsel of news! Perhaps I should do the same with my husband's annual guys ski weekend trip? Problem is, Bob didn't attend Dartmouth (though we love him anyway), that group is affectionately referred to as "The Dirtballs" and—well, let's just leave it at that. Happily, several of you have been in touch in the past few months, so "straight from the source's mouth":
Dave Story (no need for a nom de flume here) is—yup, you guessed it—our latest class author. With two recently published guidebooks that show people how, where and why to bicycle in the national parks in California, Oregon and Washington, Dave inquired as to how to get the Alumni Magazine to feature these books in the "Shelf-Life" section. "Hey,DAM, could you profile Dave Story's guidebooks in 'Shelf Life?' There, Dave—that ought to do it. Dave is done with guidebooks (although he would greatly appreciate sales continuing) and is now writing episodes of VHi's Behind the Music series. As of late November he was working Minute by Minute deep in the China Grove hoping to be Takin it toThe Streets while daughters Katherine and Fiona remind Dave and wife Tracy of the reality of parenthood—It Keeps You Runnin'. Yup, you guessed it again—the legendary Doobie Brothers are his latest feature. Catch it if you can.
Gary Ryan, general manager of People.com, is the very happy mom of first grader Isabel. Gary, Isabel and their little white dog Stella reside in Pelham, New York. When Gary isn't courting the celebs or working with Time Inc. colleague Vicky Morton (wife of our very own Andy Morton), she keeps up with fellow Pelham resident Mary Hertzog Jones. Mary and husband Bardy are certainly among our class celebrities, having had their courtship and wedding featured in The New YorkTimes "Vows" section a few years ago ("CrocodileDundee Meets Nancy Drew")—not to mention being featured in this column. Unclear if Mary is taking a break from Kroll Associates, but I can assure you that she is busy keeping her private eyes transfixed on their two sons, the youngest of whom is almost 1 year old. Gary also passed along the whereabouts of Gayle Gilman residing in London with husband Jeff and daughter Ella, working in TV production at Channel Four International as head of co-production.
Tony Kingsley is a partner in McKinsey's Boston office, delighted to be back near his hometown roots after spending 15 years in N.Y.C. (so much for that "two-year stint" in the Big Apple.) Tony and wife Sarah Perry welcomed their first child in December. If you would like more relevant details on the newest member of the Kingsley clan, join Tony and his family at reunion June 15-17,2001. Back by popular demand, on Saturday night of Reunion there will be an open mike event at the Top of the Hop—preparations are well underway. To find out details or, betteryet, offer your artistic and performing "talents," contact reunion co-chairs Rick Joyce (609-497-9365; richard.a.joyce@ac.com) or Todd Cranford (301-588-8339;cranfordt@sec.gov).
See you in June! All the best to all of you.
