Thanks to one of my dearest Hanover buddies Todd Cranford for some good column info. In his words:
"In May the College honored me with the Young Alumni Distinguished Service Award, joining previous recipients from our class, Sue Finnegan and Jeff Weitzman. The award was presented at a banquet in Hanover in May, during the Alumni Council meeting. I was blessed to have my family, a couple of former teachers and a few of our classmates join me. In her first visit to campus since we graduated, Jacquie Jones came in from Toronto, Jim Kreitman flew in from London where he's working for CS First Boston, Precious Stargell came up from Atlanta, Doug Fulton, a council member, was there and Darryl Williams TU'86 came up from New York. We all had a great time.
"Then over the Labor Day Weekend, I went back up to Hanover for the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Associations conference (BADA), where '85s were well represented. In addition to me, Deidre Ifill-Stills, Jacquie Hayott, Denise Hansberry, Veronica Jenkins and Lorenzo Chambers attended the conference. In fact, Lorenzo works for the College in the giving office. So if he calls, watch your wallet! Also, during the conference, I was elected BADA's president."
Just so Todd doesn't get all of the credit for this column, I'll do some work myself by updating you on births, Broadway, business, and Brooklyn sports. Matthew Lowell Osborne was born on April 28 to our illustrious Rebecca Osborne and husband Randy. Lowell weighed 9 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 21 inches. Congratulations to Casey on having a baby brother to abuse and amuse. Jay Berkow is keeping himself busy and out of trouble by possibly touring with his off-Broadway show Jolson& Cos., directing and choreographing at the American Stage Company in Florida and serving as artistic director for three musicals, including The Fantasticks, Gypsy and Bye, Bye Birdie.Jolson & Cos. was nominated for the prestigious Outer Circle Critics Award for Best Musical. Maria Sullivan ran the infamous New York Marathon last year and did it in honor of the New York Chapter of the Leukemia Society, raising more than $2,300 in the process. Way to go, Maria! Tim Coughlin made his first Internet contribution to our column (thank you, Tim) when he told us that he added a partner to his law firm and was able to renovate an historic Portsmouth home into a beautiful new office. Great to hear from you, Tim—don't be such a stranger. If you were in Baltimore in September 1999 I hope you caught David Adkins in his lead role as Lord Goring in Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband. Sorry this news tookso long, David—l'm sure you were fabulous. And finally, Herb Philpott and his daughter Rosemary joined Jim Kreitman and his family (wife Andrea, children Samantha, James and Robert) in London for the millennium (nobody yell at me if you are celebrating it next year). Herb sent a great photo, but unfortunately us lowly class secretaries have no authority to get photos into the magazine. We can barely survive on our 600 words a column. If I missed anyone who sent me e-mails, please forgive me, but our computer files are all messed up.
Last week someone called me a "professional mom." I like that phrase better than homemaker or domestic engineer and encourage other women in my position to do the same. We could create a whole new career track and give "the mommy track" a run for its money! Give the ones you love a kiss and never take them for granted—you never know the curves life will throw you.
