When this column appears in print in mid-March, it will be somewhat late in the day, but it still will be possible to send in recommendations for the choice of the next president of the College, and all are urged to do so. Suggestions have been invited by Bill King Jr. '63, chairman of the search committee and son of our classmate, Bill and Suzanne, and may be sent to Presidential Search Committee, P.O. Box 683, Hanover, N.H. 03755. We can hope for the best in the operation of this colossal process. Somew There among the more than 52,000 alumni/ae, there must be people who are competent to fill the bill and who will be sensitive to and eager to preserve the traditions which have engendered a loyalty remarkable among American colleges.
A two-month lead time makes contemporaneity difficult, but last reports from Jim and Mary Jo McDonald, managers of our 65th Reunion (for which the logo should head this column), indicated that preparations were progressing favorably and that 59 people had already signed up at that time. An attractive program is being arranged for June 12, 13, and 14 and includes our striding, limping or, perhaps, wheeling in at the head of the Commencement procession. Bring senior canes, caps, and gowns!
Ken Jacques has sent us a report of the American Association of Respiratory Care which verges on the ecstatic in its praise of Fred Helmholz for his services to that branch of the medical profession. A member of the board of the professional association termed Fred "the most inspiring example of a public servant we have ever encountered," and another officer described him as "a truly genteel, honorable, and revered professional." High praise indeed! And we knew the man only as a companion who ploughed with us up and down the steamy waters of Spaulding Pool in our daily team workouts under the watchful eye of Sid Hazelton! Fred is married to the former Mary Mayo and from the time of his retirement there in 1976 has been acting as professor emeritus at the Mayo Clinic.
