As we continue to reprise the roster of the '45 recipients of the College's prestigious Alumni Award, this month's focus is on Geoff Maclay. Geoffs citation in 1980 noted his membership in the Wisconsin Olympic Sports Commission and the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. His modest bio in the 50th Reunion book owns up to facilitating the construction of Milwaukee's first indoor artificial rink and the resultant youth and old men's hockey programs. He has served as trustee of the Milwaukee Country Day School, trustee and board president of the University School, president of a conservation foundation, and commodore of a yacht club. For Dartmouth Geoff has been twice president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Wisconsin, held just about every fund-raising role there is, and served on the Alumni Council 1969-73.
While Geoff is still active in his own realty company, he and Edie are especially devoted to the land trust movement, having preserved nearly 1,000 acres in their own watershed area and later founding statewide "Gathering Waters," modeled on the highly successful Vermont Land Trust. Realtors who actively support environmental protection are too rare and deserve our commendation. Geoff and Edie, with her native language fluency, enjoy stays in out-of-the-way places in Germany.
The Honorable Richard Owen, U.S. district judge and prolific composer, was in Germany last summer. Arias from three of his operas were performed with the Altenburg Festival Symphony Orchestra. His wife, Lynn, former Metropolitan Opera soprano, was the soloist, and his son Rick '93, the conductor.
Gene Wilkin has had four trips to Eastern Europe for IESC (International Executive Service Corps). His most recent was to Sofia, Bulgaria, for three projects in the communications field. Gene found himself involved with young, well-qualified, honest professionals and their managers "crooks who were a cross between Fagin and Scrooge." He reports corruption endemic among owners/managers and government officials.
Lois and Bob Bull, Jane and LloydNintzel, and Ruth and Don Sisson were river-boat mates on the Dartmouth Alumni College Abroad autumn cruise in Burgundy and Provence. Dartmouth Professor Laurence Davies provided the lively cultural commentary, which we appreciated along with cabin luxuries and table pleasures.
Bob and Lois had been to East Africa. He is still exercising his renowned photo skills, as well as drumming in five bands and composing music on the computer. Lois is writing the saga of her family, having been stimulated by the Alumni College writing course.
Lloyd consults in a federal program that provides volunteer services to not-for-profit groups, employing his specialties in financial administration. Jane is a former N.Y. DailyNews travel writer and consults now with a Seattle paper.
John and Susan Halstead were in France last fall too, on an elegant Elderhostel barge with a five-star chef. They likewise loved the Burgundy countryside, wine and cuisine.
While the gourmet groupies were cruising in France, Moe and Jane Frye were privately tooling around Tuscany in their own Alfa Romeo. I made up the Alfa Romeo part because Moe has been sparse with the details.
Not everyone hops the Atlantic. JohnOsborn flew to San Diego to attend the Super Bowl with son David 'BO and David's son Alex 10, who live in Sydney, Australia. It was the first time in a year that they had managed to get together. A special reunion indeed.
