I don't have a lot of news for you this month. Have had some difficult reaching some of you. The phone company has changed a lot of area codes, and many seem to have new numbers, or have moved. I have a request. If you have a new number, or have moved in the past year, could you take a moment—and 32 cents—and advise the Alumni Records Office in Hanover of any change. Thanks. Did talk to DaveWhipple down in Great Falls, Va. In case you've forgotten, Dave was a long-time C.I. A. man and, as I call him, our favorite "spy." Recently retired as the executive director of the Retired Intelligence Officers Organization. Works out every day and says he's in great shape. Paul Allen lives in Somers, N.Y. Retired seven years ago after nearly 40 years with an interior designing firm. He's been kept busy as president of his condo association, but he's about to give that up and really enjoy retirement. We talked a bit about his old roommate, Charlie Duncan. You may have read recently that Charlie's father, the famous Todd Duncan, passed away. Charlie, I can never reach you, and Paul reports the same. Why don't you drop me a few lines so that I can bring the class up to date on you. I had a long talk with Harlan Brumsted. Now that I think about it, I never had a talk with "Brummie" that wasn't long—but always interesting. He's a professor emeritus from the National Resources College at Cornell University. Right now he's busy planning the 50th anniversary celebration of the National Resources College at Cornell. He has a place in the Adirondacks and tells me he enjoys trying to outwit the wily trout in that area. He was thrilled to tell me one of his daughters-in-law is studying to be an attorney. Well, we do need more lawyers, don't we? Here's a few facts about our great class that you might not have known. The class of 1946 is the only one to donate money ($3,000 per year) for the restoration and preservation of rare books at Baker Library. We started this program at die request of our late classmate Duncan Fitchet. We donate $2,000 a year to the athletic sponsors program and are in second place for that. We have 37 givers, and that's a second-place effort too. Arid the total dollars we give to the program is $8,200, another second place. Be nice if we were first, but three seconds ain't bad. Thank you for your generosity.
Once again I must report the sad news of the passing of classmates. Norris R. Hammond died on December 26, 1997, and Thomas R. Furness died on January 17, 1998. We extend our deepest sympathy to their families.
