The winter mini-reunion in Florida was a huge success. That's the word from those who attended. In January 80 classmates and spouses got together for fun and frolic at the Marriott Resort in Stuart on the East Coast. Guys made it who seldom get to Hanover except for major reunions—names I haven't seen in ages like Gene Carver, Duke Doolittle, Al Durand,Mac Grant, Bob Misey, Harry van Benschoten, and many more. The affair was contrived and implemented by Bob McIlwain, ably abetted by Nev Chamberlain, Frank Harrington, and others. Looks like a natural for another winter in Florida, and possibly for other parts of the country like Chicago and the West Coast.
I had a long note from Gerry Sarno, who reminisced about the '5O athletes, memories triggered by the recent issue of this magazine on athletics at Dartmouth. I think he mentioned them all (too long a list to include here) and had some words about most of the great ones. He did neglect to mention one: himself. Fellow scribe Ken Edelson the stalwart who writes the column in Tuck's alumni magazine, reports on a note from Jay Urstadt, who is still actively running his REIT property company, based in Greenwich. In turn, Jay reports on going to Tom Swartz's 70th birthday party and quotes Tom as saying he realized he was getting old when he ordered a three-minute egg and the waitress asked for payment in advance. On the contrary, guys, we four have gotten old when we speak, print, and reprint that kind of "joke." Another voice from the past, John Schalles, e-mailed me greetings from Toledo a couple of months ago.
In the Med School's alumni magazine another fellow scribe, Dr. Paul Lena, is mostly retired and still living in Concord, N.H. He reports being with Ed Zebrowski, Bill Collins, and Jim Strickler at DMS's bicentennial symposium last fall.
About this time in my monthly column-writing, I'm reminded of the sage words of our newsletter editor, 5ifty Joe: "Tired of seeing the same old names in this column? You know how to fix that, Bucko."
Are you thinking about what you'll write for our 50th Reunion book?
Have a happy spring, and good luck to the Red Sox.
