Bob Kirk, our Hanover correspondent, reports attending the Dartmouth Alumni Council meeting last May at which a "gala dinner was held to honor the holders of the Dartmouth Alumni Award." Recipients are selected following their 25th Reunion, based on "long-standing volunteer service to Dartmouth of the highest quality, distinction in one's career, and demonstration of service to one's profession or community." The '42s so honored were Warren Kreter, Ira Berman, Dick Lippman, and Ad Winship. "A pretty impressive group," Bob says.
Alex Hooker writes from Venice, Fla., that he was sorry to miss Lori and me in Sarasota this past winter, but Fran and he did get a visit from Betsey and Dick Silver in April. He also reports that Don Baldwin attended a meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota followed by a tour of the Wellcraft Marine plant.
Another report from Guy Swenson on bequests and trusts. He writes that since the first of this year there have been two further gifts to the College from '42s. One is for $119,812 and the other for $104,167. Both are in the form of life income trusts, which will provide income for life for the donors. Guy also wrote of his pleasure on the appointment of Jim Wright as the new president of Dartmouth. "I think it is no small recommendation that Jim Freedman had so much confidence in him," he added. Guy and Mary spent a week in Bermuda in the spring with "nothing planned but resting and relaxing."
Speaking of the new president, our own president, Dave Heald, wrote a congratulatory letter to Jim Wright "from the great class of 1942," extending a rousing "Wah-hoo-wah as you take on the mantle of Dartmouth's leadership into the twenty-first century. We know of no other so well qualified or so well trained to be our leader." To which Jim Wright replied, in part: "I hope we can count on you and your class's continued support as we seek to bring further distinction to this special place."
Another message from Dave reminds us that 1999 is just around the corner. "I've made a deal at the Balsams for mini-reunion warm-up Oct. 5, 6, 7 next year, following which we'll go down to Lake Morey on Friday, Oct. 8, for our fall mini-reunion and the game on Saturday with Lehigh. This will be a lovely time up there as the foliage will just about be at its height..
The PBS TV special on Ageless Heroes portrayed Dr. Joe Wilder as an Ail-American in lacrosse at Dartmouth and a painter of athletes, doctors, and nurses. He was the only physician and artist on the program, which also included brief portraits of such names as Eartha Kitt, football's Joe Paterno, and Andrew Youngs. Joe writes: "I get more nostalgic with the aging process."
