Carl McCall '58 is running for reelection as New York State comptroller in just a few weeks. He asked his good friend, John Rosenwald, to co-author a letter to Dartmouth alums to raise money for the campaign. John obliged, and The New York Times made a story of it. It seems Bear, Stearns sells millions of dollars of New York State bonds issued by McCall's office and makes fancy numbers in underwriting fees. Under security industry rales, firms like Bear, Stearns cannot give or raise more than "negligible" sums for elected officials like McCall. Membond of the firm's executive committee and bond department cannot even do so as individuals. So, there was a lot of smoke. Although John is vice chairman of the firm, he is not a member of the bond department nor is he what the firm calls an "executive officer," so he falls outside of the rules. The comptroller's office checked the legality before the letter went out and found that it "complies with both tire letter and the spirit of the rales." It is nice to see someone our age get involved in controversy and come out on top. McCall is running against an underdog named Bruce Blakeman, who has no apparent Dartmouth connection.

Em White caught the word "sailing" that managed to leak out of something in this column and wrote about an experience he had recently in delivering a 71-foot ketch from Cork, Ireland, to Bodrum, Turkey. The voyage crossed the Bay of Biscay, which is one of the roughest patches of the Atlantic. He writes: "The highlight (lowlight?) was a full gale—in which all 15 passengers, the skipper, and mate were 'major league' seasick. I'm basically a Long Island Sound, non-blue-water sailor, but with my cast-iron stomach got a battlefield promotion as the only one able to stand watch as we roared through 20-foot waves right through the shipping lane for two days and two nights. A bit more gusto than the brochure promised."

Pass the Dramamine.

Dan Gutterman, who was a lawyer with Winthrop Stimson, a big-time Wall Street outfit, sent a memo which is without most definite and indefinite articles and is otherwise elliptical. Here goes:

"Spring '98: teaching commercial law, dispute resolution, and related topics at Mari University, Yorshkal-Ola, Russia, for Constitutional and Legislative Policy Institute, Budapest.

"Feb. '98: lectured at a seminar for Ugandan and Tanzanian lawyers on intellectual property and dispute resolution, at International Law Institute's Training Center in Uganda.

"1995-96: chief lawyer, Ukraine Agricultural Land Share Project. This is a U.S./Ukrainian group of apiculture experts helping collective farms in the transition from communism. Sponsored by U.S. A.I.D. and the Ukrainian government."

This column should prompt Dan to send more information about wife, children, living arrangements, things that are fun, and such like.
