A recent letter from Parker Holden was most appreciated..."Our grandson Christopher Holden, who received the class scholarship from 1938, a great financial help to him, is graduating now in the class of 1999. He has made Phi Beta Kappa, is graduating either summa cum laude or magna cum laude. During his four years in Hanover he has worked for the sports department announcing football games and compiling statistics for their use, and also has done similar work in the basketball program. About two years ago I had a heart operation, which was successful, except that, during the operation, I suffered a stroke, which affected my left arm and left leg. I recovered fairly well except for some residual in my left leg, which requires that I use a cane. Marion and I wanted to see Chris graduate, but she is having some physical problems and my cardiologist felt I should not attend. We have seen Doris and Earl Ward in Florida in the winters and also in Hanover. Marion went to Miss Farmer's School with Doris while Earl was getting his M.B.A in Boston.
Phil Thompson, of Portland, Maine, asks classmates who come to Maine for various reasons to call him at (207) 871-7121, at 84 West St. "As a widower of six years, group activities are difficult for me. I am keeping well with walking or jogging for the morning paper, tennis, rowing, and tai chi. I'm supporting six children and 15 grandchildren." Treasurer George Kingsbury took part in a skit commemorating the 175th anniversary of The Universalist Church in Keene, N.H. George's greatgreat-grandfather was one of the incorporators of the church.
Statistics of interest...since the late sixties, the College has gone from 3,000 male students and nine months of operation to 4,300 male and female students in year-round operations. The faculty has grown from 260 (one female) to 354 (73 females). Research grants have burgeoned and master's and Ph.D. programs have gready increased.
It was so enjoyable to hear from Parker and Phil.... Don't you be a stranger. Please write!
