Old friend Bob Herrick '48, secretary for that class, points out to me that with his column, mine and the one by JackKent 50,old phi Deltshavea three peat on secretarial chores. Knew that those Saturday night English tutorials in the cellar of the Phi Delt house would pay off.! Head Agent Paul Bjorklund sends along some interesting facts on alumni giving by '49ers. A total of $71,401 was donated in scholarship gifts in memory of Doris Thomas, a gallant and gracious lady sorely missed. And one classmate has contributed for 53 consecutive years! Five others for 51 years, 35 for 50 years and another 30 for 49 years. That's pretty impressive and really puts into perspective the long traditions of Dartmouth loyalty. A clip from the Salisbury, Conn., newspaper tells us that Nick Nickerson is still very active in his retirement, reviewing books and leading a course at the Taconic Learning Center Program. Salisbury is up in that beautiful northwest corner of Connecticut. And down in Westport, Conn., the paper tells of Mike Gish showing at a local gallery and the fact that his oil painting "Mother and Dying Child," created in a Somalin refugee camp, now hangs in the foyer of the United Nations Assembly building. Carll Tracy helped his mother celebrate an interesting occasion. She turned 99 years old on Sept. 9,1999. Carl, I am sure went down to a dark alley in Laconia and slipped a numbers runner a big bet. JohnStearns, the mother of all Bull Moose, was deservedly recognized as Class President of the Year by the Alumni Association. Our Congrats. Hint to Burt Proom, we expect nothing less from you. The latest number: YOU have 470 classmates. Do everything you can to keep that number static. At the fall Leadership Weekend, Trustee Peter Fahey '68, Th' 69, and five students gave a report on the committee work on the five principles laid out to improve the social and residential life of the College. Made a lot of sense, thoughtfully approached and how proud you would have been to hear the intelligence and balance of these students. The Dartmouth Club of the Upper Valley has the esteemed Punchy Thomas, new shoulder and all, as the president. And 14 '49ers are members of this club, gravitating back to the Hanover plain like lemmings. You should come more often, too. And, of course, on behalf of
all the officers of the class of '49, best wishes for the happiest of holiday seasons and may the next century be a truly rewarding one for you and your family. New Year's resolution #1: Send Thomson some news before he runs out completely.
