December 1955: The news was marriages: John Pope to Virginia Lee Starr, JohnCrowe to Joan Rutty, DonKeller to Jo Ann Duval, JerryBarton to Peggy Streifler, Nels Putnam to Lucia Roraback, Jay Chandler to Fleur Varney. Reported as employed: Gus Wendell in Chicago as a salesman for Hiram Walker; Al Terrill as an engineer for the J.E. Sirrine Cos. in Spring Grove, Pa.; Dave Snow at Boston's First National Bank; Dave Bardett at Kemper Insurance; Dick Gorsey as a sales representative for Jones and Laughlin Steel in Indianapolis; and Gib Dyke in Norfolk, Va., with Merntt, Chapman & Scott. The December 1955 DAM reported that the class of '54 raised $3,747 from 414 classmates for the Alumni Fund (we have come a long way).

The September 1998 Webster Times (your secretary gets news very late) reported that Jim Conrad has been appointed vice president for external affairs by Nicholas College. Jim has held various positions at the college since 1957.

Ron Dougherty was named Stark County, Ohio, Republican chairman. Ron has set an example for all of us with community involvement. He is on the board of trustees of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, general counsel to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, chairman of the Keep Canton Clean/Keep America Beautiful Advisory Committee and is on the boards of directors of the Canton Hilton Hotel and Nickels Bakery. In his spare time he practices law. Received an e-mail note from GeorgeMurdoch. He is enjoying retirement, spending summers in Gulf Shores, Alabama and winters in lowa. He recommends Gulf Shores to the class golfers: "A dozen great courses within an hour's drive." George and Marylce recently celebrated their 45th anniversary.

Last May the University of Rhode Island conferred an honorary degree on George Graboys. George practiced law in Rhode Island, joined Citizens Bank in 1969 and was appointed CEO in 1981. He served as CEO for Citizens Financial Group and joined URI's College of Business Administration as executive in residence and adjunct professor.

The Eastern Shore Land Conservancy of Maryland has added Joel Poorman to its board of directors. Joel is retired from E.I. DuPont Cos. after serving for 34 years in various managerial assignments in the United States, Latin America and Europe. He also served as director-treasurer for the Centreville School and is chairman of the audit committee for the Delaware Employee Pension Fund. We hope retirement allows Joel and Ellie to enjoy their ten grandchildren.

Do not forget the 1954 holiday luncheons: Dec. 14 at The Pillar House in Newton, Mass., and Dec. 15 at The Yale Club in New York City. (What happened to Heston's gathering Philadelphia?)

These monthly notes are composed three months before they appear in the DAM. If you cannot wait to read them they are posted, when composed, on the class web site at www.alum.dartmouth.org/classess/54/. To get news to your secretary while it is new news communicate with me at berlin 1954@aol.com.

Have a good holiday season!
