The New Year brought forth its usual resolution to make a diligent effort to get the copy for this column up to Hanover before the due date, so despite the desire to be out with the kids on toboggans and other coasting apparatus on the icy slope behind the house in near-zero weather I'll tend to the duties of scribe by pulling the typewriter up just as close to a heat register as I can get it and hope that the fingers aren't too numb to perform the "hunt and peck" system on a machine that never does spell too well anyway.

Speaking of cold weather, I've been advised that Clift Whiteman purchased some snowshoes in New York recently so as to have a full complement of winter gear prior to departing for Minneapolis. Seriously though, Clift's recent appointment as a senior vice president of Investors Diversified Services, with responsibilities for corporate finance, was announced in the "New York Times" and other news media. He had risen through the ranks of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York to the position of vice president in charge of the midwestern banking division.

On the west coast, Gene Carver has been appointed senior vice president of Western Mortgage Corporation, and is in charge of that Los Angeles-based firm's San Francisco regional office. I'm looking forward to seeing Gene in the near future as his firm is one of the mortgage correspondents for Hartford Life, and I'm about to schedule a trip out that way to look over HL's mortgage portfolio in the Bay Area.

A third announcement in the field of finance is that of Charlie Abbe, who has been elected assistant to the president of the Manchester, N. H., Savings Bank. When time and conditions permit a few hours on the slopes, Charlie may be seen mastering the advanced trails of Ragged Mountain in N. H.

Gene Hotchkiss, whose appointment as executive dean of Chatham College in Pittsburgh recently was announced in this column, also has been appointed for a twoyear term to the visiting committee for Case Institute of Technology, a division of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. This committee's duties include studying the Institute's programs of instruction, research activities and personnel, and reporting its findings and recommendations to the University's officials and Board of Trustees.

Cdr. Frank H. Barker, U.S.N., has returned to Moffat Field, Calif. During his year as commanding officer of Navy Patrol Squadron 19, over half of which time was spent in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia, the squadron received the Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet Battle Efficiency Pennant, the Chief of Naval Operations Aircraft Maintenance Award, and the Capt. Arnold Jay Isbell trophy for excellence in anti-submarine warfare.

Frank Gilroy's award-winning play "Who'll Save the Plowboy" was a November pro- duction of the Dartmouth Players in the Hopkins Center Theater. Frank has been in Paris on location where Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra are starring in one of his latest movies; meanwhile we the movie version of his famous play "The Subject Was Roses," starring Patricia Neal and Jack Albertson, was scored excellent or good by critics and by 85% or more of Consumer Union's reporting readers, according to the summarized results of movies reported in the January issue of "Consumers Reports."

Skimming through the November 1968 Address List of Dartmouth College Alumni Officers, we find several members of the class as presidents and secretaries of local associations and clubs. The head of the Dartmouth Club of Central Connecticut (based in New Britain) is Donald G. Russell, while the same spot in the Worcester, Mass., club is held by Donald W. Ayres. RichardG. Putney presides over the Glens Falls, N. Y., club, while Malvern Hill Jr. wields the gavel of the Dartmouth Club of Western Washington (Seattle). Robert W. Cone is secretary of the Permian Basin Dartmouth Alumni Club (Midland, Texas).

Among Calvin G. Bauer's several positions in Dartmouth matters is that of Area Enrollment Director for Districts 163, 165, 166 and 167; Cal is associated with Arthur Andersen & Co., 1507 Pacific Ave., Dallas, Texas 75201. District Enrollment Directors include Cape Cod's Robert M. Burrill, c/o Yarmouth Shopping Center, South Yarmouth, Mass. 02664; West Tennessee's Kenneth F. Clark Jr., c/o McCloy, Wellford & Clark 1701 First National Bank Building, Memphis, Tenn. 38103; and lowa's GeorgeC. Carpenter, 3822 Greenwood Drive, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.

In our age bracket (please pardon that expression) I'm sure that many of us know fellows (and how soon will it be gals?) whom we believe to be good Dartmouth prospects. We should take an active interest in getting the outstanding ones, especially those who now are in their junior year, interested in applying; the next few months encompass the period when these young people should be contacted!" I'll be very happy to advise you, upon request, of the name of the Area Enrollment Director or the District Enrollment Director for your locality, as you may wish to consult with him about enrollment policy and procedure prior to or during your talks with prospective applicants; there are twenty Area Directors, under which are 108 District Directors, including directors in Alaska, Hawaii, and three in Canada.

Meanwhile, a great deal of appreciation is extended to the many members of the class who are active in enrollment and interviewing activities (particularly at this time of year), and also to those who are active in numerous other activities which are of import to the College and the class.

An unexpectedly sad ending to this column is the news just received of the untimely passing of Robert T. Gray in Framingham, Mass., on December 5, 1968. Bob, a long-time resident of Framingham and the owner of Gray's Wayside Furniture Store in that community, is survived by his wife Barbara, a son and a daughter to whom the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
