We wish we could tell you why our 1934 news article did not appear in the November issue of the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine but we can't. It evidently was lost in the mail, for we did send it out.
Here is the article we promised to tell you about which appeared in the HoustonChronicle on Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998. It is about John Anderson, our classmate, who was sitting in the room of a fraternity brother, also named Anderson, on Valentine's Day in his senior year. During conversation John looked over at his friend's desk and saw an envelope that looked familiar to him. He asked his friend who the letter was from and he said, "It's a Valentine letter from my girlfriend in Texas." John reached into his coat pocket and drew out an envelope just like it, in the same handwriting but addressed to him. They compared letters and found they were identical. The writer signed off on each one with "when are y'all coming down to see me? All my love, Texas Tammy!" John met her in Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, and his friend in Paris. Both continued corresponding but never made it to Texas. A quarter century passed before John met his friend, Dick, at our 25th Reunion and asked, "Whatever happened to our Texas Tammy?" They both decided to send her a Valentine's postcard.
Texas Tammy wrote back "Hi,y'all! Yes, I still live in a small town in Texas, married to a successful doctor. We have six children. Your postcards, which were apparently read by someone in the Post Office before they were delivered, are the talk of the town. Thanks a lot, fellows. Hope I can live this down! Anyway, I know you meant just fun and no harm. Happy Valentine's Day to you, too. Those were the days. Too bad y'all didn't come down and see me. My husband did, and he says he's still glad he made the trip, even though he didn't realize at the time that he was just one of my many correspondents."
Don't forget our 65th—June 11, 12 & 13, 1999.
