Probably one of the most exciting things happening this winter and spring in Hanover is the series of lectures on "The Power and the Presidency" sponsored by the Harle and Kenneth F. Montgomery Endowment Fund to advance the academic realm of the College. "The intent is to take Dartmouth's last winter and spring terms of this twentieth century as an opportunity to look back at presidential leadership in the century and examine how certain Presidents have used—or misused—the power of their office," said Barbara Gerstner, assistant provost and executive director of the Montgomery Endowment. This group of speakers is a powerhouse of presidential biographers, four of them Pulitzer Prize winners. They will discuss Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and others. The lecturers are David McCullough, Robert Caro, Mchael Beschloss, Edmond Morris, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and David Maraniss. All are prize-winning authors whose names are familiar to many of us. Unfortunately, by the time you read this, the lectures will be over, but perhaps there will be reprints or videos (which we could see at the 50th in 2000) available. A friend in Hanover Judy Breed, wife of Bill Breed '52 and a collector of Dartmouth memorabilia, wrote that it is wonderful "how much all walks of life in Hanover look forward to a speaker series of this magnitude." She also commented that Ken and Harle Montgomery should be commended for making possible this fabulous opportunity for all in the Upper Valley to hear these lectures, as they are open to the public.

I received this note from Barbara and Don Hunt: "Season's Greetings to ALL! We have enjoyed 1998 even as older age continues to catch up with us. Barbara is settled in at the Clark House Nursing Home, and Don continues on at Fox Hill Village. We get together regularly for dinner, more often in the apartment now. Many visits from family and friends help us pass the time. Of course, we do enjoy every minute together that we can find. We celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary this year, and Don turns 96 on December 24 my Christmas present. Best wishes, Barbara and Don Hunt.
