Once again I am indebted to Bing Donaldson for classmate information. Apparentlyhis nostalgic letter to the "troops" really encouraged long quiet classmates to take pen in hand. Incidentally, Bing tells me we went over the top in this year's fund drive in June, a tribute to his hard work and persistence. Among his correspondents were Gordon Carter, writing from Quimper, France, where he is finding a downsizing move engendered by health reasons a bit of an adjustment from a former busy lifestyle involving environmental, historical and cultural matters as well as gardening. Gordon also noted his wife Janine, was the first spouse of a returning 43 veteran on campus in 1945. Hex Harrigan wrote of befuddlement finding things absent in his beloved rolltop desk and remarked it was a "Damn good thing a grateful nation hasn't asked my opinion of current messes in far places." Frank Sherwood sent Bing a copy of his correspondence with Con Young, in which he referred to his 45-year career as a university professor, from which he retired at 75 in 1995, and being "fairly peripatetic, living in three different places during the year." (Whew! I can't handle two!) Finally, a note from Frank Loesch sketched out to Bing his activities following his departure from Dartmouth after one year to attend MIT and pursue a career as an aeronautical engineer. Frank paid tribute to his Dartmouth English course and mentioned Bob Grant, Harry Gustafson and Harry Bishop as classmates he remembers. In a different vein, I received a note from Jim Malley enclosing his tribute to his close friend, Fred Wallis. Space prevents adequate coverage but Fred had a distinguished naval career, at Dartmouth lived with the late and irrepressible John Conn, and "was gifted with an infectious sense of humor and natural personal warmth." Recent deaths to report are Jaime Font, Frank Hussey, Chuck Arnstein, Robert Harvey and Kent Lane. Our condolences to each family. If anyone has information regarding Jaime Font let me have it as College records have nothing. Stay well!
