In response to my request for your thoughts on retirement as we all tarn 55, I received an interesting fax from ChuckAtkins from the island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. He says that "after 30 years of living in Washington, New York, and Boston while working in government—first for Robert McNamara (along with John Ramsey '65), then for John Lindsay, and finally for Michael Dukakis—and in the private sector at Arthur D. Little Inc. and starting our own business, my wife, Kristen, and I last year packed our bags and moved to the Virgin Islands to build our retirement home."

Chuck said that they rationalized that if it did not work out, they were still young enough to go back. They hired a contractor to build a two-bedroom owner's house and a four-bedroom vacation rental villa (with swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, and basketball hoop). Despite the usual construction delays, the project is finished, and they are advertising their "brand new villa" for rent in the DAM classified ads. (They offer a 15-percent discount to Dartmouth alums; tel/fax 340-693-9186.) Chuck concludes, "So far, so good, on the road toward retirement for us!" I also suspect Chuck that a few classmates may well respond to your ad—we remember St. John as being absolutely spectacular!

In late November I enjoyed lunch in Boston with Roger Urban. He and his wife, Dyan, live in Concord, Mass., and work together running Urban Wallace and Associates, a marketing consulting firm that was started in the mid-eighties. Roger's daughter Elizabeth is now at Stanford Business School after graduating from Harvard and working for McKinsey. His son Joseph graduated from Bucknell this past June and is skiing and working in Alta, Utah, this winter.

Roger and Dyan are also busy keeping up with daughter Alexandra, who just started first grade. As many of you know, Roger lost his first wife, Mimi, to cancer ten years ago and just 20 months ago lost his brother Douglas '71 to drowning. Despite these tragedies, he is very upbeat and says that they have taught him to really appreciate the good things in life. He would love to hear from classmates at .

Among the many subjects covered at the class executive committee meeting in Hanover on October 18: The dedication of the new Webster Hall/Rauner Special Collections Library is scheduled for Friday/Saturday, April 16-17. Because our class, under the leadership of SteveWaterhouse, played such a significant role in this restoration, we may well have a class dinner on Friday night if enough classmates are in town.

The 1999 out-of-Hanover mini-reunion is scheduled for Bermuda around the weekend of April 30-May 2 under the direction of Bob Blake and Carl Boe, and the Hanover mini-reunion will be October 22-24 (football vs. Cornell) and run as usual by Bob and Sharon Blake. We hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend these events. They are always a lot of fun.
