The class of 1993 is proud to have a newly elected Maryland state senator. This fall Alexander X. Mooney became the youngest Republican elected to the Maryland State Senate ever (according to preliminary research). Alex first had to battle the 15-year Republican incumbent, John Derr, in what the local Frederick, Md., papers have called a "bitter primary contest." Apparently Mr. Derr did not take losing well to a young whipper snapper like Alex because he actually threw his support to the Democratic candidate, Ronald Bird, in the general campaign. Alex went on to defeat Bird in the general election with 56 percent of the vote. Alex wrote in that he is very excited for the challenge that lies ahead. Congratulations, Alex, and best wishes on continued success in your political endeavors.

Thanks to the wonders of e-mail, I have received quite a few notes from the class, including a message from Alex Kaplan. Alex has left the Land of the Delta Blues (Memphis, Tenn.) for San Marcos, Texas, which is 20 minutes south of Austin. Alex reports: "I am a master of fine arts student in creative writing at Southwest Texas. So, basically, I read and write fiction every day. Not such a bad idea, except that it costs money and three years of my life to get a degree that won't guarantee me anything other than comments about how worthless my degree is." Anyone who wants to get in touch with Alex can reach him at 1021 Chestnut, #A4, San Marcos, TX 78666; (512) 392-9184; .

Our retired webmaster, who designed the first '93 class web page, Kerry Handron, sent me an e-mail to announce that she and her husband, Dave '92, are leaving Houston. Kerry had been working at a planetarium, which is now open with the first full-view video system in the world. Anyone interested in expanding your knowledge of deep space can go to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of An Earth ling's Guide toDeep Space, which Kerry co-authored.

Fresh out of Tuck, Myrna Laine e-mailed me with an update of her recent move to Boston. She has been working since July for a small investment bank as an associateequity research analyst. She loves her job and is doing exactly what she wanted to do coming out of business school. Myrna reports that Monica DeLeon is also doing well and is back in Chicago after traveling extensively over the summer from Kuwait to Finland to Greece.

Speaking of international travel, DavidKrause sent me a note regarding a Dartmouth wedding in La Paz, Bolivia. Luis Paz married Manuelita Arnal on December 19, 1998. In attendance were the groom's bother, Nestor Paz, Rodolpho Luzio-Antezana '94, and David. Luis is finishing his Ph.D. at MIT, and Nestor is a vice president with J.P. Morgan in Buenos Aires, Argentina. David is living close to the Hanover Plain in Claremont, N.H., working as a partner with Ray-Tech Infrared, a startup company based there.

Finally, thanks to everyone who has already contributed to this year's Alumni Fund. Munir Haddad, Matt McGinnes,Veree Hawkins, and Kurt Rieke will continue as our head agents. Our class goal is to have 50 percent participation in the Alumni Fund. With your help we will be able to continue a strong giving tradition to Dartmouth following an excellent sth Reunion gift of $33,232. If anyone is interested in volunteering to help out, please e-mail Christopher Boffoli at or call him at (800) 228-1769.
