A fresh breeze from the West Coast: "Rennie" Spauling celebrated the new millennium in Del Mar, Calif., with Mark Gates among others. Rennie has become a grandfather for the second time, and reports that all three of their children live in New York City. Rennie and Elsa are enjoying retirement, spending six months in Mexico and six months in San Francisco. If you believe that the TV show "Politically Incorrect" is somehow crossing the line, please call Herb Schoenberg. Herb is an attorney for ABC and is responsible for the content of the program! Herb shared some of his experiences with us at our 40th Reunion. Stimulated by the Reunion, DaveRobinson returned to California and immediately shed 10 pounds! After finishing a teaching stint at UC Berkeley (travel photography course), Dave booked a return trip to West Africa. While Dave tours the Ivory Coast, wife Carol is doing yoga in Peru! Plans are being made to travel together—a "novel concept!" Bill Beshore, still in San Francisco, tells of seeing Bill Sweet at the airport. Though too rushed to speak, Beshore reports that Sweet's arm was in a "rather contorted cast"...to be continued.

Now, back to the East Coast and a note from Sam Adams. Sam, living in Lincoln, N.H., has recently completed serving (as V.P.) on a National Academy of Sciences panel, reviewing the adequacy of environmental protection related to mining on public lands. The report, "Hardrock Mining on Federal Lands," contains recommendations to improve both regulating and administrative systems. Further information can be found at www.nap.org.

Staying in the East, and catching-up on some notes recently forwarded to me: PaulDowning, living in Saugus, Mass. (his hometown), retired from teaching English after 40 years. Paul regularly sees old Chi Phis Dick Schmidt, Greg Stark and RichPaul and reports that the fraternity bond remains strong and lasting.

Speaking of fraternity ties, fellow Phi Delt John Wardrop sends a nice note from Grand Rapids, Mich., thanking me for his recent birthday greeting from our class. John mentions that his wife is V.P. of development for Grand Valley State University. I'm not sure what John is doing! Thanks to wife Gaye, we learn that another Phi Delt, Ted Izzard, has only semi-retired to Tucson, Ariz. After a successful career in the Far East, Ted continues to dabble in real estate ventures in the Tucson area. They enjoyed Christmas in Florida with their 1-year-old granddaughter Alexandra. Finally, let's give a rouse to Jim Bybee for the great job on our 40th Reunion book—a must keepsake for all '59s. It may be the best we look for a long time!

May in Maine.. .time to go outdoors! Let's stay re-connected,
