Lots of news about classmates. Let's get right to it.
Jeff Aldred wrote from his long-time home in Boulder, Colorado, that he still enjoys life there. After getting his M.S. from the University of Colorado Jeff has been involved in a number of start-up businesses, all of which were tremendous fun and great challenges. Jeff now is the project manager for American Standards water-filtration efforts. He busies himself playing rugby and staying involved in many outdoor activities. Jeff will be joining the class at the Vail offsite.
Charles Atkins has split his career since Dartmouth between government and the private sector. He worked in the Defense Department under Robert McNamara, then for New York City under John Lindsay before going to work at Citibank and then on to Harvard, where he started his own consulting firm. Charles got back into government in Massachusetts, and along with his wife, Kristin Demong, wound up working on Michael Dukakis's 1988 campaign. For the past 10 years Charles has been back in the business world. He has developed a vacation rental villa in the U.S. Virgin Islands (www.greatexpectationsusvi.com). Alums get 10-percent off, so head on down! One of Charles and Kristin's three daughters is Rachel a Dartmouth '90 grad. Before the November election, Charles presciently wrote: "Flying around with the 1988 Democratic candidate was an unbelievable experience; experiencing first-hand how we elect a president is an amazing experience." (Say what? I write this just as the Supreme Court for the second time stayed the Florida Supreme Court in the Great Recount Shootout of 2000.)
In summers, Ed Stafford leads tours of Eagle Island, off the Maine coast. The island was Admiral Peary's home and base for his North Pole explorations. Ed is a grandson of the admiral. Ed lives in Marietta, Georgia, works in Atlanta, and since retiring from the Navy has authored several books on naval history.
Dr. Tony Garland was recently awarded a Distinguished Service Award for his lifetime of distinguished service on behalf of the Island Medical Center and Island Nursing Home in Stonington, Maine. Tony now lives and works with the homeless in the Washington, D.C., area.
Lots more detail in Bob Murphy's most recent class newsletter and on our class Web site. Check it out. I've still got more in the mailbox. Keep the news coming in, guys. It's always great to hear from you.
If you are still debating about whether you can make the Out-of-Hanover mini-reunion in Vail, stop doubting and get onto it. March 8-11. As of this writing Steve Waterhouse reports that Hank Amon, Jeff Aldred, Ted Atkinson, Cari Boe, maybe Sin Sing Chiu, Norm Chrisfianson, Jim Griffiths, Chuck Lobitz, Ron Riley and Marsh Wallach are all onboard. We hope the list will grow, and that you will be on it too.
On a very sad note, one of our past class presidents, Jock Hosmer, died on December 8 after an auto-related accident. A full obituary will appear in an upcoming Alumni Magazine edition.
