I received an update from our Chicago connection, Steve Kroll, about our classmates in the Windy City vicinity. Steve practices law in Chicago and is general counsel for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. After 17 years of living in the city, he and his wife and two children (ages 3 and 6) are moving to the suburbs where they will live three blocks from Steve Anderson. Steve Anderson currently works for Morgan Stanley. Steve Kroll also mentioned that he took the kids to Kiddieland in the Chicago "burbs" the first warm day after a long winter and ran into Shep Burr. Shep had his two daughters with him, Olivia (age 11) and Campbell (age 9). They were in town from Washington, D.C., for a visit with their grandmother.

If you're traveling out west and see a familiar face zoom by it might be Chris Mullery. Chris left Chicago more than 10 years ago for Colorado, where he continues to lead motorcycle trips of foreign tourists through the National Parks.

Returning to news about East Coast members of the class, Ben Knox and wife Lisa are in the process of rehabbing a 200-year-old house on Maryland's eastern shore. Ben, a spine and wrist surgeon, continues to build his practice while his wife works for a venture capital fund. They have a 1-year old daughter.

In the field of education, Kathy Bourque, has been named director of institutional advance- ment and corporate and foundation relations at Bay Path College in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Another Massachusetts resident, Bill Burgess, is a joint owner of the Boston Cannons. The Cannons are Bostons entry into the new six city Major League Lacrosse pro outdoor lacrosse league. The other owners are Matt Dwyer '75, Jack Brennon '76 and Peter Fahey '68. The head coach is Mitch Whiteley '73. Games are played in Lowell's Cawley Stadium.

An exuberant announcement arrived from Abner Oakes and wife Lolly regarding the birth of their first child, Charles Jewett Oakes, on April 26. Charles is named after Abner's father-in-law (Charles Lincoln Jewett) and his great-great grandfather, Charles W. Oakes, class of 18 83, who scored the first touchdown in Dartmouth College football history.

At the recent meeting of the Alumni Council in Hanover we had quite a turnout from our class. We are well represented on the council. In fact, I think we should probably get some class credit for a mini-reunion for the number of classmates there. Classmates in attendance were Patsy Fisher-Harris (the associate director of alumni relations), myself and Bob, Molly Sundberg Van Metre (a regional metropolitan representative), Karen McKeel Calby (an at-large representative and chair of the communications committee) and Ned Mandel, who was there to see his father, Steve '52, receive an Alumni Award. Pat Berry also serves on the council as chair of the young alumni awards committee.

The editor of the Alumni Magazine, Sean Plottner, has contacted all of the class secretaries asking us to gather some information from our classmates. He is working on a cover story for the January/February 2002 issue that will focus on Dartmouth's special places. They would like to know about "special places" that you might remember on campus and the reason they are special to you. The deadline for the January/February issue is October 21 so please contact us before that time if you have some input. We look for ward to hearing from you!
