Hanover has requested me to keep this month's notes brief so as to leave plenty of space for the listing of the 490 members of our class who contributed so generously to the 1956 Alumni Fund.
Which reminds me - our class Chairman, Lew Johnstone, recently returned from some excellent Alumni Fund Committee meetings in Hanover and is planning to return in January for Alumni Council meetings. Tenner Gordon hopes to be on hand too. He is hoping that in January, even in Omaha, the ice business will be slow enough to enable him to make the trip.
Another recent visitor to Hanover was Chuck Bolte who was recently appointed vicepresident of Viking Press of New York City.
Promotions in the educational world are getting to be everyday occurrences for our classmates of that profession. Arnold W. Bartlett was recently appointed Principal of the Sharon High School of Sharon, Mass. After receiving his Master's degree at Boston University, Arnold was teacher and coach at Hillsboro, N. H., High School. Then he taught at Chicago Latin School for Boys. Prior to coming to Sharon, he was Headmaster of Sanborn Seminary in Kingston, N. H. Now he and Jessica and their eight children live in Sharon. Wow! An enviable record, in several respects. Not only is he the father of twins, but he is also the father of four potential Dartmouth freshmen.
Vice-presidencies are contagious too, particularly these days. Warner B. Bishop Jr. was recently elected a vice-president of ArcherDaniels-Midland Company's Foundry-Products Division in Cleveland. He lives in nearby Cleveland Heights.
Stu Steffey has been bombarding me with notices of changes of addresses that have been returned to him with class dues. We certainly have an itinerant class. One of the many who have recently sought new horizons is HalsteadK. Van Nostrand. He, Lorraine, and their two boys have moved from Long Island to Sarasota, Fla., where they have built a new home and where Halstead has gone into the printers' ink supply business with a brother.
Not everyone is leaving Long Island, though. Bob Darbee is busily engaged keeping his four children in line in East Williston, when he is not commuting to his summer cottage in East Marion on Gardiner's Bay or to his Brooklyn law office. He is a neighbor of Dick Darby.
Now that the World Series is over, things are beginning to get back to normal, with afew exceptions. Vic Schneider and Frank Hallstill haven't made a public appearance since Don Newcombe walked out of Ebbets Field; and I am sure that Doctors Bill Meyer and Tony Guerrieri, and you other Milwaukee fans are still muttering "Wait 'til next year."
There has been another wedding in the class. But I'll save that until next issue, when there will be plenty of space, and by which time I expect to have all the details.
By next issue I will have returned from New Haven with a notebook and a camera. We are hoping that the weather and the response to the notice of our informal pre-game class picnic will have been good. This notice was sent to 123 classmates in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, so I am hopeful of having plenty of news and maybe a few pictures for subsequent issues.
Season's Greetings to every member of our class, to their wonderful wives, and to all their little ones, and best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous New Year.
