With characters named Dorian Faustus, Aries Monet-Manet, Fanny and Molly Flanders, Reverend Moby, a retired seaman turned preacher, D. Scaggs and many others of similar ilk, Joe Pardee leads us on a whimsical journey. In Dame Fortune's Favor, his first novel Joe has written a "biography" of a teenager attending a stuffy prep school who makes a pact with the devil and engages in lots of high jinks along the way. It is complete with footnotes and other interesting allusions that enhance the humor while hinting at other levels of interest. Joe takes a satirical look at society, and provides us with a real fun experience.
And speaking of writers, Phil Parshley writes a super Class Notes column for the DMSAlumniNews &Notes. Unfortunately, he never writes of himself. In response to my request he sent me a very newsy letter in which he told me that he and Bobbie are "retired." Bobbie gave up her elementary school teaching job four years ago and now teaches reading four days a week for three hours. Phil has also taken a restful position in his retirement as medical director of the Oregon Medical Board, a position that requires about 32 hours per week. They manage to take time off, though, and when Phil is not sailing, they've traveled to New Zealand for the Americas Cup trials, to Switzerland, then Tuscany, and most recently to Buenos Aires, Antarctica and home through Santiago, Chile.
Also traveling: Charlotte and Chuck Buchanan, inspired by a 10-year relationship with the city of Tula, Russia, organized a romantic Russian tour. At this moment they are leading a small but very enthusiastic group made up of Liliane and Ron Lazar, Ann and Scrib Fauver, Trish and Woody Spurgeon, Lu and Jack Morris, Mildred and Hilton Rosen, Virginia and Barron Schoder and Marilyn Paganucci on this wonderful adventure.
In what seems like a flashback to 50 years ago and all the ensuing years, the following have recently appeared as important headlines: Digital Impact, a premiere provider of online direct marketing solutions for enterprises, announced the appointment of Edward Spiegel to its board of directors. Kendle International, a leading full-service contract research organization announced the appointment of Robert C. Simpson to its board of directors. The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall named Charles Buchanan to its board of directors. Congratulations, still going strong!
I have a feeling that we can look for an occasional classmate or two to be sitting comfortably on the south side of the Green across from the Inn enjoying the ever-changing panorama before him. A bench has been installed there bearing the following plaque: "In loving memory of Paul Donnelly Paganucci D 1953, TU 1954, Student-Businessman-Administrator-Mentor Husband-Father-Colleague-Friend." I know that I will once again take advantage of and appreciate Paul's welcoming grace and civility.
Please watch for word regarding our reunion as we start the countdown to our 50th next June.
And once again I close with a sad note of the death of another classmate, Stephen Bell. Our class offers its sincere sympathy to Stephens wife, Cynthia, and their sons Stephen '76 and Stuart' 80.
