The venerable old Harvard Club of Boston provided the venue for a wonderful luncheon at which the class honored Dr. Gilbert Shapiro as our Classmate of the Year. On hand were the following: Charlie Buchanan, Nancy and Allen Collins, Owen Cote, Fred England, Dick Fleming, Dick Giesser, Dick Goodman, John Harris, Bob Henderson, Lowell Holway, Bill King, Ron Lazar, Byron Menides, Donna and Chuck Reilly, Timmy Shapiro, Bobby and Mark Smoller, Bernie Sudikoff, Paul Supovitz and Nancy and Warren Wentworth from our class. Gil's sister and brother-in-law, Rene and Jack Rubin, and Gil and Timmy's friend, Florence Narva, were present. President Reilly acted as toastmaster, and spoke of the history of the award, citing the previous winners. Bob Henderson outlined the process by which the committee selects the recipient, and Ron Lazar read and presented a lovely citation to Gil that was written by Donald Goss. In addition, Chuck presented Gil with an engraved plate and the custody for the year of the silver bowl on which is engraved the names of all previous winners. Gil then treated us to a poignant slide show depicting the shocking conditions under which health care is provided in Bhutan, South Vietnam, and Cambodia, a few of the countries to which he has gone as a volunteer to teach and perform orthopedic surgery. Thanks to Dick Fleming and Bernie Sudikoff, who arranged the entire affair.

I received the following message from A Collins, whom I saw at the luncheon looking well-rested. He has just sold his business and he and Nancy had just returned from a wellearned vacation.

"Get ready, set, go! The '53's great 50th reunion is closer than you think. Mark the date, June 5-8, make your plans and be there! So far, 144 of you have responded with 116 saying yes, 26 a strong maybe and only 2 have said no. The post-reunion with Jack Patton at Trapp Family Lodge has 78 people so far and 107 plan to be there Thursday night. Rooms will be tight off campus, so the best plan is to get on the phone ASAP and make your reservations at area hotels. Dick Dunham is working hard to secure rooms, but your individual call is the best bet. It's going to be a great record-setting event, so be sure you're a part of it! Let us know about your plans. If we can be of help in any way let me hear from you at acoll23615@aol.com."

Between games of a most enjoyable doubleheader victory over Penn, I spent a little time with Dick Dunhan, who had just returned from a three-week, 6,000-mile trip to 17 states, mostly in the west and southwest. He was accompanied by an architect whose interest in Frank Lloyd Wright and his disciples lead them to visit many of the magnificent homes designed by these famous architects.

Sadly, we report the death of Stanley P. Bell and extend our sincere condolences to his widow, Cynthia, and their sons Stephen '76 and Stuart '80.
