When it rains,it pours.Theoldsayingis applicable to our class when celebrating the news that yet another'51 is honored with a prestigious Dartmouth Alumni Award. First, it was Herb Knight in October at our fall mini and now it's Mike Choukas at the December Alumni Council meeting. The citation will appear in the 51 Fables. Congratulations, Mike. Our Andy Pincus, classical music critic for the Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and contributor to numerous other publications, has authored a book titled Musicians with a Mission. He profiles six artists who have advanced American musical culture. Available at $28.95; contact your local bookseller or e-mail me. A letter from Jim Rogers informed me that, although retired from the Minnesota District Court, he has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Supreme Court board on continuing legal education.
Passing through San Francisco recently was Houston's Tom Barnett and wife Suzanne. Over dinner, among other things, Tom told me that his favorite place in Hanover had to be the Hanover golf course. Sadly, he notes, so many of his golf pals are no longer with us: Joe Boissy, Duke Carey, Peege Cornish and John Southworth.
Continuing to learn about classmates' fa- vorite places while undergraduates in Hanover, I have several more foryou. Jerry Block is the first one to name the Hanover Inn porch rocking chairs. His father introduced him to this Hanover tradition when he visited Dartmouth as a high school senior. Jerry proudly tells of passing on the tradition to his children. Jerry Lindsay, fondly remembering his fraternity experience, said his favorite place was anywhere in the Phi Gam house. Dave Leslie came forth with two very different favorite places: Baker stacks and the Nugget. Also with two favorites is. John Hatfield, who mentioned Glee Club trips and the Orozco Murals. Finally we have Bayard Johnston, who not only appreciated the Tower Room but also recalled the good times rooming in 204 Gile with roommate Ron Thorburn.
