On-campus campaigning for : the 2004 presidential election is already under way. Massachusetts Senator John Kerry spoke to a crowd in Rockefeller Center in early January, saying he was not "going to allow the president to bamboozle people" on the issue of going to war with Iraq. The Democratic contender also took the commander-in-chief to task for making too many "unilateral" decisions and railed against "special interests," which he said are "stealing your democracy." The New Hampshire primary takes place January 27, 2004.

Fiona Herring'02 was named a Rhodes Scholar in January, making her Dartmouth's third 2003 Rhodes winner. Herring, who is now studying for a master of science in the analysis, design and management of information systems at the London School of Economics and Political Science in England, earned a bachelor of arts in computer science at Dartmouth. At Oxford Herring plans to study for a master of philosophy in social anthropology. She'll join fellow Rhodes Scholars Heidi Williams '03 and Amar Dhand '01 in Cambridge. Another Dartmouth alum, Collin O'Mara '01, will study at Oxford on a 2003 Marshall scholarship.

English professor Cleopatra Mathis was awarded a $20,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in December. She plans to use the money to find a place of solitude where she can begin work on her sixth book of poetry. "I feel blessed to have the recognition," Mathis says. The professor's poems have appeared in magazines, textbooks and anthologies including Poetry, American Poetry Review and The New Yorker. She has taught English and creative writing at Dartmouth since 1982.
