As I write this in late February, I am reminded of the words of Whit Williams, who reported from New London, New Hampshire: "I'm beginning to lose my sense of humor about New England weather." By the time you read this in April, spring will have sprung, we hope, even in New England.
Alex Hoffman is the new class secretary for '51 class of Tuck School, replacing Ken Edelson, who wrote the column for the Tuck Alumni Magazine for many years and who died two years ago. Alex and Twinks retired to East Dorset in southwestern Vermont near Manchester and the Bromley ski area. After a highly successful career with Doubleday and the Association of American Publishers, he now serves as a trustee of several organizations, including the Southern Vermont Art Center. (Alex: I plagiarize unabashedly from the Tuck and Medical School magazines.)
Alex writes that Bill Frenzel reports: "Ruthy and I are busily growing old in the northern suburbs of Washington, D.C. I am still pretending to be a scholar at the Brookings Institution and sitting on a number of nonprofit boards. We travel a bit, garden some and try to spoil our grandchildren." You will recall that Bill represented Minnesota in the House for many years. Another item from Alex's column tells of Walt Lindenthal's move to Meriden, New Hampshire, where he and Ro keep busy on their 50 acres. He sits on several boards and is very active in the Dartmouth sports scene.
Reminder: This year's Alumni Fund still has a couple of months to go. If you haven't already done so, please send in your contribution. Class agent Gordie Hood, along with many other volunteers, are to be commended for the long hours they spend working for the College.
Our music man, Tom Ruggles, writes that he spent a week last August in Montana at the Buckaroost for the 28th time with George Harris, Merritt Osborne, Ort Hicks '49 and other Dartmouth alumni. He and Janot went barging in France and visiting family members in Switzerland in October.
This month's get-well-quick notice: Bob Mcllwain had a hip replacement last winter. My guess is he is already charging around the tennis courts. Circle the dates October 3,4, and 5 for the fall mini-reunion, when the Big Green takes on Penn. The Saturday night dinner will again be at Pierce's Inn in Etna.
Gordie and JoAnn Hood, alongwith Frank Harrington and Rosemary Kipp, attended the dedication of a bell tower and carillon donated to Miami University (Oxford, Ohio) by Bill Pulley in honor of his father, Verlin, who had served on the university's board of trustees and as mayor of Oxford. Have a great spring and send me some news.
